What to Know About Installing Sod in Montauk
Montauk is the easternmost point on Long Island — a terminal-moraine landscape of rolling hills and rocky soil very different from the outwash plains across the rest of the South Fork. How do I care for new sod on an exposed Montauk lot?
Keep it consistently damp for the first two to three weeks — the salt wind pulls moisture out of new sod faster than anywhere else we work, and the sandy pockets of the moraine soil drain quickly. Water early in the day, watch the exposed edges facing the ocean, and hold off mowing until the sod is firmly rooted, usually around 14 to 21 days.
