Kentucky Bluegrass Sod

Kentucky Bluegrass Sod

The most popular and recognizable cool-season sod in the Northeast — Kentucky Bluegrass produces the classic "carpet lawn" appearance with fine, dark blue-green blades that homeowners associate with premium turf. KBG self-repairs through underground rhizomes, filling in bare spots and worn areas naturally, and performs well across the full range of Northeast conditions: full sun, moderate shade, and medium to high foot traffic.

Kentucky Bluegrass needs more water and fertilizer than tall fescue varieties to maintain its appearance through summer heat and dry periods, making it the right choice for homeowners with irrigation systems and a willingness to maintain a traditional ornamental lawn. For households with heavy dog traffic or active families, see our premium RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) option, which combines KBG's self-repair with the deeper roots and urine tolerance of tall fescue.

Turf Type Tall Fescue Sod

Turf Type Tall Fescue Sod

A bunch-type grass with the deepest root system of common cool-season varieties — Jonathan Green Black Beauty Tall Fescue produces roots up to 4 feet deep, giving it exceptional drought tolerance and durability without requiring irrigation. We recommend Tall Fescue for full-sun properties without sprinkler systems, high-traffic areas, and homeowners who want a low-maintenance lawn that holds up to heat and dry conditions without constant watering.

Tall Fescue doesn't self-spread the way Kentucky Bluegrass does, so occasional overseeding helps maintain density over time. For households with dogs or active families that want self-repair built in, see our premium RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) option — a tall fescue cultivar with rhizomatous recovery that fills in bare spots automatically.

Bluegrass Fescue Sod Mix

Bluegrass Fescue Sod Mix

The most versatile sod we offer — a balanced blend of Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall Fescue that performs in full sun, partial shade, and the mixed-light conditions most Northeast yards actually have. The Bluegrass contributes the rich color and fine-bladed appearance homeowners want, while the Tall Fescue contributes deeper roots, drought resistance, and durability under foot traffic. The result is a lawn that looks like premium Bluegrass turf but handles real-world conditions far better than Bluegrass alone.

This is the right choice for most residential properties — yards with a mix of sun and shade exposure, families with kids, occasional pet traffic, and homeowners who want a beautiful lawn without the high maintenance demands of pure Bluegrass.

For homeowners with dogs, active families, or anyone who wants a self-repairing lawn, we recommend RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue). RTF is a premium tall fescue cultivar that produces underground runners, allowing the lawn to fill in bare spots, worn paths, and urine damage automatically — the kind of recovery typically only seen in Kentucky Bluegrass, but combined with the deep roots and urine tolerance of tall fescue. RTF is the most dog-resistant cool-season sod available and the right choice for households where standard sod has failed in the past.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! Product was delivered on-time and as fresh as it gets. We installed sod about 2 years ago. With regular watering and fertilizing it looks very good. Highly recommend this company! No need for many words just look at before and after pictures.

Benefits Of Sod

Why Choose Sod

Instant results. Sod is a finished lawn the day it’s installed. No 30-90 day establishment window, no waiting through bare soil and mud, no managing the daily watering schedule that seed requires for two months. The lawn that arrives on the truck is the lawn you have at the end of installation day.

No establishment failure risk. Seed and hydroseed installations face a window of vulnerability where heavy rain, summer heat, hungry birds, or one missed watering cycle can erase weeks of work and require starting over. Sod arrives already rooted, already mature, and already capable of handling normal weather and use within the first couple weeks of installation.

Use the lawn immediately. Foot traffic, kids playing, dogs running, and outdoor furniture are all manageable as soon as 2-3 weeks of sod installation. Seed lawns often require 60-90 days of restricted use before they can handle normal activity without damage. For families, properties with pets, and any homeowner who actually wants to use their yard, this difference matters substantially.

Available year-round when ground isn’t frozen. Sod can be cut and delivered any time the ground isn’t frozen — early spring through late fall and into winter in mild years. Seed installation is restricted to specific spring and fall windows, with summer and winter installation typically not viable. Sod gives you scheduling flexibility that seed cannot match.

Erosion control from day one. Slopes, hillsides, and graded surfaces hold immediately with sod. Seed installations on slopes typically require erosion control blankets, additional management, and weeks of vulnerability before the grass establishes enough to hold soil. Sod handles the erosion problem the day it’s installed.

Fewer weeds during establishment. A new seed lawn provides ideal conditions for weed germination alongside the desired grass, which is why weed pressure on newly seeded lawns is typically high during the first season. Sod arrives weed-free from a managed farm and starts the lawn at full density, which dramatically reduces weed competition during establishment.

Sod Care

Before You Order Sod

Sod is a living product, and to fully enjoy its benefits, it needs proper care from the moment it arrives. Each order is freshly cut and palletized, so it’s crucial to lay it the same day for the best results.

Preparing for Your Sod Delivery

To ensure a smooth installation:

  • Complete all prep work beforehand – The area should be tilled or have fresh topsoil spread.
  • Schedule help in advance – If you’re hiring labor, book them before placing your order.
  • Consider multiple deliveries for large areas – This prevents sod from sitting too long on pallets.

While sod can survive on a pallet for more than a day, it’s not ideal. If you can’t install it immediately, keep it moist, out of direct sunlight, and covered with a tarp.

New Sod Installed? Read This First

The first 30 days are the most important part of establishing a new lawn. Proper watering, limited traffic, and the right mowing schedule help your sod root deeper and stay healthier long term. Sod also helps reduce erosion, trap dust, and keep outdoor areas cooler than bare soil.

Read our guide:

What to Do the First 30 Days After Sod Installation

Installing and Watering Your Sod

Once laid, sod should be watered immediately to encourage root growth. On hot days, soak the sod as you go—don’t wait until the entire area is installed to begin watering. This is especially critical in summer months when high temperatures can quickly dry out the sod. Spring is the best time to install sod, thanks to cooler temperatures and frequent rainfall.

Ordering & Delivery

Sod deliveries require planning. We recommend placing your order at least a week in advance to ensure availability. While we often deliver sooner, it’s not guaranteed. Unlike mulch or other landscaping materials, sod is a perishable product that requires careful scheduling and preparation.

RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) Sod For Dogs

The Sod That Solved the Dog Lawn Problem Has a Story Most People Have Never Heard

The lawn you walk across with your dog didn’t happen by accident. RTF is the result of a 30-year breeding effort to do something that turfgrass scientists had spent generations calling impossible — give tall fescue the self-repairing power of rhizomes. From the Rutgers laboratories where the first true rhizomatous tall fescue was identified to the patent that protected the genetics through a generation of cultivar refinement, this is the story of how a single breakthrough produced the most dog-durable cool-season lawn ever developed.

Frequently Asked Sod Questions

Please call or message if you cannot find the answer to your question.

What's The Minimum For Sod Delivery?+
The minimum order for sod delivery is 1 pallet of sod, which covers approximately 500–600 square feet depending on the type of grass and your location. One pallet is usually enough to cover a small yard, patch problem areas, or complete a compact landscape project. More questions? This post goes into more detail - read here.
Can I Pick Up Sod?+
At this time, CT Sod offers delivery only. We do not have a pick-up option because sod is a living product that must stay fresh and moist from the farm to your property. By delivering directly, we ensure your sod arrives in perfect condition and ready to install the same day.
When Is The Earliest I Can Have Sod Delivered?+
Typically, sod deliveries can be scheduled within 3–5 business days. We finalize our truck routes the day before your delivery and will text you your delivery time so you can prepare. During peak season (spring and fall), we recommend scheduling as early as possible to secure your preferred delivery date.
What Areas Do You Deliver Sod To?+
We deliver sod across all of New England and the Tri-State area, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. Whether you need sod in Fairfield County, Westchester County, the Hamptons, Long Island, Cape Cod, the Boston metro, the Berkshires, southern Vermont, the New Hampshire Seacoast, southern Maine, or anywhere in between, our team brings farm-fresh sod directly to your home or job site. Standard delivery timing is 3-5 days from order to delivery; longer-distance deliveries may require additional lead time.
How Do I Care for New Sod After Delivery?+
Proper care starts immediately after installation. New sod needs to be watered within 30 minutes of being laid and kept consistently moist for the first 2–3 weeks. After that, you can transition to a regular watering schedule. For a full breakdown, check out our new sod care guide.
How Much Does Sod Cost in Connecticut and Nearby Areas?+
The price of sod depends on the type of grass, order size, and delivery location. On average, homeowners in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island can expect to pay by the pallet (500–600 sq. ft.), with discounts available for larger orders. For the most accurate estimate, visit our sod pricing page or request a custom quote today.
What's the best sod for dogs?+
For dog-heavy yards, Rhizomatous Tall Fescue (RTF) is the strongest cool-season choice. RTF has deep roots up to 4 feet that handle concentrated dog urine better than shallow-rooted varieties, and rhizomatous self-repair fills in damaged spots from pets, traffic, and digging during the growing season. Kentucky Bluegrass also performs well in dog yards thanks to its rhizomatous spread, but RTF specifically is what we recommend for active dog households. Standard bunch-type tall fescue doesn't self-repair the way RTF does, which makes RTF the meaningful difference for properties with dogs. Read our complete guide on the most dog-resistant sod and why RTF is the best for dogs.
What's the difference between Kentucky Bluegrass and RTF?+
Kentucky Bluegrass produces the classic Northeast lawn — fine blades, soft texture, dense uniform green appearance, and rhizomatous self-repair. Best for showcase lawns, luxury estates, sports fields, and high-traffic family yards with reliable irrigation. RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) has wider blades, deeper roots up to 4 feet, better drought and heat tolerance, and stronger performance for dog yards specifically. Best for dog-heavy yards, drought-prone properties, full-sun installations without irrigation, and shaded areas where Kentucky Bluegrass struggles. Both varieties self-repair through rhizomes, which separates them from standard bunch-type tall fescue. We carry both varieties as regular products.
What sod is best for shaded yards?+
For yards with significant shade, our Kentucky Bluegrass + Tall Fescue Blend or RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) typically perform best. The blend leverages tall fescue's natural shade tolerance with Kentucky Bluegrass's self-repair, handling the mixed sun and shade conditions most residential properties have. RTF specifically tolerates partial shade better than Kentucky Bluegrass alone. For deep shade conditions where less than 4 hours of direct sun per day reach the lawn, fine fescue varieties (typically through seed rather than sod) may be the better long-term solution. Call (203) 806-4086 to discuss your specific shade conditions and the right sod choice for your property.
Do you offer sod installation services?+
Yes. We offer professional sod installation across our full delivery footprint — Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. Our installation crews handle soil preparation, grading, sod laying, and edge work. Installation pricing varies based on lawn size, site conditions, soil prep requirements, and accessibility. Larger installations and properties needing soil prep, grading, or old-lawn removal are quoted per project. Call (203) 806-4086 with your project details for an installation estimate. You can also order sod for pallet-only delivery if you're handling installation yourself or working with your own contractor.
Can I install sod myself?+
Yes — many of our customers handle their own installation, particularly homeowners and landscape contractors comfortable with sod work. Pallet delivery includes positioning by our all-terrain forklift exactly where you need it. Successful DIY installation requires proper soil preparation (3-6 inches of quality topsoil over prepared base, smooth grading, light watering before installation), accurate measurement to order the right number of pallets, and immediate watering after installation. Sod should be installed within 24 hours of delivery for best results. We provide installation guidance with every delivery. For step-by-step DIY guidance, see our blog content on sod installation at ctsod.com.
When is the best time of year to install sod?+
Cool-season sod installs successfully across the active growing season — typically late April through late October in the Northeast. The strongest establishment windows are spring (April through early June) and fall (mid-August through September). Spring installations capture the full first growing season ahead of summer stress. Fall installations enter their first summer with developed root systems, which often produces stronger long-term performance. Mid-summer installations succeed but require more attentive watering during the heat-stress establishment window. Both spring and fall work — the choice depends on your project timing and irrigation capability.
How long does sod take to root?+
Sod typically establishes initial root contact with the underlying soil within 7-14 days. Active root extension continues through the first 4-8 weeks. Full establishment — when the lawn is functioning as a unified root system rather than a mat of cut sod — typically takes 6-9 months for spring installations, with the lawn reaching mature performance by spring of the second year. The full month-by-month progression is in our complete 12-month sod rooting timeline.
When can I let dogs on new sod?+
Keep dogs off new sod for at least 2-3 weeks after installation to allow initial root establishment. Light dog activity is acceptable around weeks 3-4 once the sod has rooted enough that you can lift a corner and feel resistance. Heavy use, active play, and concentrated digging should wait until 4-6 weeks post-installation. RTF specifically handles early dog activity better than other varieties due to its self-repair capability, but even RTF benefits from a brief establishment window before active dog use. For dog-heavy yards, RTF is the strongest variety choice.
Do I need to prepare the soil before sod delivery?+
Yes. Proper soil preparation is the single most important factor in successful sod establishment. The lawn area should be cleared of existing grass and debris, the soil should be loosened to 3-6 inches deep, and the surface should be smooth-graded with no low spots or high spots. Quality topsoil should be a minimum of 4 inches deep over prepared base — sod laid on compacted construction soil or thin topsoil rarely thrives long-term. The soil should be lightly moistened (not waterlogged) before sod arrives. We can provide soil prep services as part of our installation packages, or you can handle prep yourself before pallet delivery.
How do I measure my lawn for sod?+
Measure the area in square feet by multiplying length × width for each section, then add the sections together. For irregular shapes, break the area into squares and triangles, measure each separately, and add the totals. Add 5-10% extra for waste during installation, particularly for lawns with curves, beds, or obstacles. Our sod is delivered on pallets covering 500-600 square feet each, so divide your total square footage by 500 to estimate the number of pallets needed at the standard pallet size. Call (203) 806-4086 if you'd like help calculating your project — we can walk through the measurements with you and estimate pallet count accurately.
Do you sell to landscape contractors and builders?+
Yes. We work with landscape contractors, builders, property managers, and commercial accounts across our full delivery region. Contractor pricing reflects volume and ongoing relationship discounts compared to single-project residential rates. We offer scheduled delivery for active project timelines, project-specific bulk pricing for subdivisions and commercial installations, and consistent product availability for contractors managing multiple jobs simultaneously. Call (203) 806-4086 to set up a contractor account or discuss specific project requirements. We also work with builders on new construction projects requiring sod across multiple lots.
How do you place sod pallets at delivery?+
Our delivery trucks are equipped with all-terrain forklifts that allow us to place pallets exactly where you need them — driveway, backyard, side yard, job site, or anywhere reachable from where the truck can park. The all-terrain capability means we can handle uneven surfaces, soft ground, sloped properties, and most residential and commercial site conditions that standard forklifts can't navigate. Pallet placement at the install location saves significant labor compared to deliveries that drop pallets at the curb and require you to move them. Let us know your preferred placement when you order, and our delivery team will coordinate the specifics on delivery day.
Can I lay sod over dirt or existing grass?+
Sod can be laid over prepared dirt — quality screened topsoil graded smooth and lightly moistened — but it cannot be laid over existing grass. Laying sod over existing grass produces poor rooting, uneven establishment, and high failure rates as the underlying grass decomposes and creates voids. The existing turf needs to be physically removed (sod cutter or kill-and-rake) before new sod installation. The exposed soil should then be loosened, leveled, and prepared before new sod arrives. For a complete breakdown of soil prep requirements and what works versus what doesn't, see our guide on whether you can lay sod over dirt.
What's the difference between RTF and regular tall fescue?+
RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) and standard tall fescue are different plants despite the similar name. Standard tall fescue is bunch-type — each plant grows independently and doesn't spread, which means damaged spots from traffic, pets, or wear leave bare areas that don't fill in naturally. RTF combines tall fescue's deep roots and durability with rhizomes — underground stems that produce new plants and self-repair damaged areas during the growing season. The rhizomatous self-repair is the meaningful difference for properties with dogs, high traffic, or any wear pattern. We carry both varieties — RTF for buyers prioritizing self-repair and dog tolerance, Jonathan Green Black Beauty Tall Fescue for buyers prioritizing deep roots and drought tolerance without needing self-repair.
What if my sod is damaged or has issues at delivery?+

Sod is a perishable product, so timing matters significantly if you have concerns. Inspect your sod at delivery and take photos immediately if you see damage, quality issues, or anything that doesn't look right. Contact us the same day — ideally while the delivery driver is still on-site or within a few hours of delivery. We need to be alerted immediately so we can assess the situation, document the issue, and resolve it appropriately while the sod is still in the condition it was delivered.

We cannot help with sod issues reported the next day or later. Sod that's been sitting unwatered, exposed to heat, or left on the pallet beyond the install window deteriorates rapidly — once that happens, it's no longer possible to determine whether the issue originated at delivery or developed from post-delivery handling. Same-day notification with photo documentation protects both you and us by capturing the actual delivery condition.

For best results: inspect each pallet on arrival, photograph any concerns immediately, and call (203) 806-4086 right away if anything needs attention. If everything looks good at delivery, get the sod installed and watered as quickly as possible — ideally within 24 hours, sooner in hot weather.
