Sod Varieties for Suffolk County Installs

Eastern Long Island is sandy, maritime, and mild — Hamptons estates, North Fork farm country, and the Pine Barrens, all on fast-draining outwash soil near the salt. We lead with deep-rooted, salt-tolerant turf:

Black Beauty Tall Fescue sod

Black Beauty Tall Fescue

Deep-Rooted
Min sun: 4+ hrs Shade: Medium

Deep roots (2–3 ft), drought tolerance, refined look. Strong choice for partial-shade or lower-maintenance sites.

The top pick out here — tall fescue's deep roots handle Long Island's sandy, fast-draining soil and the salt air off the ocean and bays better than bluegrass.

Tall Fescue guide
Bluegrass-Fescue Blends sod

Bluegrass-Fescue Blends

Most Versatile
Min sun: 4–6 hrs Shade: Medium

Bluegrass aesthetics with fescue durability underneath. The default install for most residential sites.

Our balanced default for inland and North Shore lots — bluegrass color with fescue durability for the mix of sun and estate-tree shade.

Best sod for the Hamptons
RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) sod

RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue)

Best for Dogs & Kids
Min sun: 4+ hrs Shade: Medium

Self-repairing rhizome system fills in damage from foot traffic and dog use. Strongest performer for active family lawns.

Great for busy Hamptons summer homes and rentals; self-repairing rhizomes recover from heavy seasonal traffic.

Kentucky Bluegrass sod

Kentucky Bluegrass

The Classic
Min sun: 6+ hrs Shade: Low–Medium

Rich color, tight knit-in. The traditional install for Suffolk County properties with established irrigation.

For open, sunny, irrigated showcase lawns set back from the salt — the classic look, but thirstier on sandy soil.

Why Use Our Install Crews

06Local soil, climate & access

Installing Sod Across Suffolk's Two Very Different Coasts

Suffolk County is really two install environments, and the right sod and approach depend on which one you're on. The South Fork and the Hamptons — Southampton, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, East Hampton, Wainscott, Amagansett, Montauk, plus Westhampton to the west — sit on sandy glacial-outwash soil that drains in hours, take a constant salt-laden wind off the open Atlantic, and run heavy deer pressure along the wooded and field-edge blocks. A lawn there has to be deeply rooted and matched to the exposure or it doesn't make it through August. We run install-only on the East End: you (or your landscaper) handle the prep, and our crew arrives with same-day farm-cut sod and lays it tight.

The North Shore estate corridor at Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor is a different world — glacial-moraine loam over sandy subsoil, wooded canopy and deep shade, steep harbor-side slopes, and a gentler Long Island Sound exposure instead of open-ocean salt-wind. The variety call shifts toward shade-tolerant tall fescue blends, and the logistics shift toward long estate drives and grade access rather than soft-sand beach tracks.

And then there's Shelter Island, reachable only by ferry between the two forks — every pallet rides the North or South Ferry, so the install date is scheduled around the boat. Whichever coast you're on, sod is cut to order the morning of your install and placed exactly where your crew is working by all-terrain forklift.

Sod Installation in Montauk, NY: A 4,500 Sq Ft Builder Lawn

In July 2026 the East End builder behind our 3,000 sq ft Montauk new-build brought us back one door down for a 4,500 sq ft lawn, sodded while the listing was already live. His Google review landed the same day: “Best sod company around. We’ve used them on about 5 of our Hamptons properties and I wouldn’t recommend anyone else.” For how we treat a job when things go wrong, see the waterfront Montauk estate we re-laid for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install sod across Suffolk County, New York?
Yes — full-service install is available across Suffolk County. Our own install crews handle the install on site — one point of contact from quote through completion — so you get the same end-to-end service we provide in our home market. Lead time is typically 2–7 days from quote. Call (203) 806-4086 to scope your project.
What's your install minimum for Suffolk County?
Our typical install minimum is 1,200 sq ft. Smaller projects can usually be served with pallet-only delivery (600 sq ft minimum) for you or your landscaper to install.
What's included in your sod install vs. what a landscaper does?
We're sod specialists, not full-service landscapers. We handle the sod-specific work: stripping old turf, topsoil, grading, sod delivery on the same day as install, and laying with tight seams by crews that do this every day. We don't handle hardscape, plantings, irrigation install, tree work, or ongoing maintenance. If your project needs those, hire a landscaper for the full job and we'll work as the sod sub — many landscapers across Suffolk County already do this with us.
Which sod variety is best for Suffolk County install?
For full-sun, irrigated lawns, Kentucky bluegrass gives the traditional refined look. For partial shade or drought tolerance, Black Beauty tall fescue. For dogs and active families, RTF (rhizomatous tall fescue). We'll match the variety to your specific site during the quote.
How soon can I walk on the new sod?
Light foot traffic is fine after the first week. Heavy use (parties, kids' games, dog play) should wait 2–3 weeks while the sod roots into the soil. We leave a one-page care sheet with the install covering watering, first-mow timing, and the first month's protocol.
Is there a surcharge for sod installation in the Hamptons and on Long Island?
Yes. Long Island and the Hamptons carry a $0.30/sq ft surcharge with a 1,200 sq ft minimum order, reflecting the haul out to the East End. Every job is quoted in writing before crews are scheduled — pick your town below or call (203) 806-4086 for a project quote.
Can you deliver and install sod on Shelter Island?
Yes. Shelter Island is reachable only by ferry, so every pallet rides the North Ferry from Greenport or the South Ferry from North Haven. We schedule the install around the boat and bring the sod across the same day it's cut — call ahead so we can book the ferry window into your install date.
Which sod variety holds up best in the Hamptons' sandy, salt-wind soil?
On the open-Atlantic South Fork blocks, a deeply rooted tall fescue or a fescue/Kentucky bluegrass blend handles the fast-draining sandy outwash and salt-laden wind better than straight bluegrass. On the shaded North Shore estate blocks at Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor, we lean further toward shade-tolerant tall fescue. We match the variety to your exact site during the quote.
Do you handle deer pressure on East End lawns?
Deer won't kill an established lawn, but they compact and wear newly laid sod along the wooded and field-edge blocks before it roots. We'll flag it at the quote and time the install and first-mow protocol so the lawn knits in fast; longer-term browsing of beds and borders is a fencing and planting question for your landscaper.
When is the best time to install sod in Suffolk County?
Spring (April–June) and early fall (September–October) are ideal for rooting before heat or hard frost. We install through the summer too, but East End summer lawns need disciplined watering against the sandy soil and salt-wind. Book early in the season — Hamptons May and June install dates fill fast against in-season Route 27 traffic.
What's the best sod for a sandy Hamptons lot?
Salt-tolerant tall fescue and fescue blends are the reliable choice — deep roots that hold in fast-draining sand and good tolerance of ocean salt air. A topsoil base helps it establish.
Does Long Island's sandy soil need topsoil before sod?
Usually yes. A few inches of quality topsoil over sandy outwash greatly improves water and nutrient retention, helping the sod root in. Our full-service installs include it.
What works for a North Shore estate in Lloyd Harbor or Cold Spring Harbor?
The hillier, wooded North Shore does well with deep-rooted blends and tall fescue for shade; open, irrigated lawns can carry premium bluegrass for the showcase look.
Can you deliver during the busy Hamptons summer?
Yes. We plan around East End traffic and rental turnover. Book early for spring and summer dates — lead time is typically 2–7 days.

We had a great experience with CT Sod. After our pool installation, our yard needed significant cleanup and restoration. Their team did an excellent job prepping the area with quality topsoil and installing the new sod. They were professional, friendly, and especially careful working around our brand-new pool and patio. Communication was easy throughout the process via text, and they took the time to recommend the right type of sod specifically for the conditions in our yard. The finished lawn exceeded our expectations and looks fantastic. They also provided great value—we were able to use the extra topsoil and sod to improve other areas of our property. Overall, very happy with the quality of the work and the entire experience with CT Sod.

I recently dealt with Sean and Kayla to set up a sod installation around a new pool - couldn’t be happier with the process, price, and results. Highly recommend CT Sod - you won’t be disappointed with this company. I snapped this while the guys were working. In 4 hours they almost had the whole 5,000 square feet of fresh Kentucky Bluegrass installed. Results speak for themselves.
