Long Island and the Hamptons run a meaningful premium over standard Northeast sod pricing for three reasons: longer delivery distance from sod farms, higher install labor costs, and the property-scale of estate work in eastern Suffolk. Here is the honest 2026 breakdown.
Material delivered (per square foot)
| Region | Standard KBG blend | Premium tall fescue / RTF | |---|---|---| | Nassau County | $0.85 to $1.10 | $1.25 to $1.65 | | Western Suffolk (Huntington, Smithtown, Babylon) | $0.90 to $1.15 | $1.30 to $1.75 | | Central Suffolk (Brookhaven, Islip) | $0.95 to $1.25 | $1.40 to $1.85 | | Eastern Suffolk (Riverhead, North Fork) | $1.05 to $1.40 | $1.55 to $2.00 | | Hamptons (Southampton through Montauk) | $1.25 to $1.75 | $1.75 to $2.50 | | Shelter Island, Fishers Island | Custom quote | Custom quote |
These are delivered prices, not installed. Hamptons pricing reflects the actual logistics: a single pallet to Bridgehampton or Montauk is a 220-mile round trip from the closest sod farm, and the trucks have to be back the same day.
Installed pricing
| Region | Standard install | Estate-scale install | |---|---|---| | Nassau County | $1.85 to $2.75 | $3.00 to $4.50 | | Suffolk County (west of Riverhead) | $2.00 to $3.00 | $3.25 to $4.75 | | Hamptons (Southampton, Sagaponack, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Montauk) | $2.75 to $4.00 | $4.00 to $7.50 |
Estate-scale installs (typically 10,000+ sq ft on properties with restricted access, full prep, and irrigation tie-in) carry a premium reflecting site complexity, not just sod cost.
What drives the Hamptons premium
Three structural reasons:
1. Distance from the supply. The closest commercial sod farms to East Hampton are 100+ miles west. Every pallet pays for the truck and fuel both ways. 2. Crew mobilization. Installation crews working the East End are either driving 2+ hours each way from western Suffolk or staying in season-priced lodging. That cost shows up in the install line item. 3. Access constraints. Hamptons estate properties often involve gated drives, lawn-protection requirements, irrigation systems that have to stay live, and rental-season deadlines. None of that is technical difficulty; all of it is time on site.
Concrete examples (2026)
- 1,000 sq ft standard sod, delivered to Sag Harbor: ~$1,350 to $1,750
- 5,000 sq ft RTF sod, installed with light prep in East Hampton: ~$18,000 to $25,000
- 20,000 sq ft estate install with full prep + irrigation tie-in in Bridgehampton: ~$80,000 to $140,000
- One pallet delivered to a Montauk family-home rebuild: ~$700 to $850 with surcharge
What we won't do
We won't deliver to the East End in July or August without a same-week installation lined up. Three-day-old pre-cut sod sitting in 85°F humidity on a Hamptons lot through a weekend dies. That's not a price problem — that's a physics problem, and we're direct with customers about it on the phone.
We also won't quote Hamptons jobs by sq ft over the phone without seeing the access and prep requirements. The variance is too wide. Send photos or schedule a walk and you'll get a real number.
