How the Numbers Work
What goes into the delivered price
Most “sod calculators” online give you a per-square-foot multiplier and call it a day — which is useless, because the per-square-foot rate isn’t the actual cost. The real cost of a sod order is the material plus a stack of fixed and variable line items that don’t scale with area. We show every one of them on the estimate so you can sanity-check the total against any other quote.
Material
Per-square-foot rate by variety and order size. Five tiers from 500 sq ft up through 4,000+ sq ft — the rate drops at each tier. Tall Fescue and RTF add $0.10/sq ft.
Delivery
Flat $99 delivery fee covers truck, driver, fuel for the standard delivery footprint (CT, MA, NY mainland, NJ, RI, NH, VT, ME).
Pallet handling
$20 per pallet covers the farm's palletization, the forklift on the truck, and the all-terrain off-loading at your property.
Fuel surcharge
$50, only on orders 500–900 sq ft. Covers the cost of dispatching a full truck for a 1–2 pallet load. Orders 1,200 sq ft and up don't carry this.
Sales tax
Sales tax on the taxable portion of the order at your delivery state's rate. The calculator displays the line item so you can see what's included before you place the order.
Cuts & waste (optional)
Adds 5% to the square footage. Recommended for any lawn with curves, garden beds, walkways, or tree wells — the extra costs less than coming up a pallet short.
The estimate updates live as you change variety, size, or waste setting. Every line item is broken out — you see the material total, delivery, pallet charge, fuel surcharge (when applicable), and tax. The total is what we’d invoice if you placed the order today.
Pick The Right Grass
Which sod variety should you calculate with?
Kentucky Bluegrass / KB Mix
Most popularFine-bladed, dark blue-green color, self-repairing through underground rhizomes. Best for irrigated yards in full sun to light shade — the classic carpet-lawn look. Highest pricing because it's the most farm-labor-intensive variety to grow and the most requested.
Turf-Type Tall Fescue (Black Beauty)
+$0.10/sq ft vs KB · drought-toughDeepest root system of the four varieties — multi-foot roots that hold moisture and handle drought without sprinklers. Coarser blade than KB but heat- and traffic-tolerant. The choice for full-sun yards without an irrigation system.
Bluegrass-Fescue Blend
Most versatileMixed-variety sod that combines KB's color and fine texture with tall fescue's deep roots and durability. The best general-purpose choice for properties with both sun and shade and homeowners who want one variety across the whole lawn.
RTF — Rhizomatous Tall Fescue
+$0.40/sq ft vs KB · best for dogsPremium tall fescue with underground runners that fill in worn paths and pet-urine damage on their own. The most dog-resistant cool-season sod available — recommended for any yard with high-traffic pets or sports use.

Delivering To Long Island Or The Hamptons?
Use the dedicated Long Island sod calculator
Long Island and Hamptons orders carry a +$0.30/sq ft surcharge across every variety and a 1,200 sq ft minimum to cover ferry/bridge logistics and East End delivery routing. The standard calculator above doesn’t apply that surcharge — use the Long Island calculator for accurate East-End pricing.

Sod calculator FAQ
How accurate is the sod calculator?
+
The calculator uses our live wholesale price sheets — the same per-square-foot tiers our office quotes from. It includes the $99 delivery fee, per-pallet handling charge, applicable sales tax, and the $50 fuel surcharge that applies to 500–900 sq ft orders. Final invoice can vary if the job needs installation, soil prep, rush scheduling, or special-equipment delivery (steep grade, ferry, restricted access).
What does the price include?
+
Fresh-cut sod from the farm (Kentucky Bluegrass, KB Mix, Tall Fescue, or RTF), palletization, transport, delivery to your property, per-pallet handling, fuel surcharge where applicable, and applicable sales tax for your delivery state. The number you see is a delivered price — no surprises on the invoice. Installation, grading, and soil prep are quoted separately because they're crew-and-site dependent.
Does the calculator work for installation, or just delivery?
+
Delivery only. Installation is quoted per project because labor cost depends on site access, grade, prep required, and old-lawn removal. For an installation estimate, use the calculator for the delivered material cost, then call (203) 806-4086 with site details — we typically quote installation in the same conversation.
Why is the minimum 500 square feet?
+
500 sq ft is one pallet, which is the smallest unit a farm cuts and palletizes. Orders below 500 sq ft aren't economically deliverable — the truck, driver, fuel, and farm handling cost the same for a half-pallet as a full pallet, and we'd be selling the customer something they'd be unhappy paying for. For patch jobs under 500 sq ft, most homeowners are better served by a local landscape supply yard.
Why is there a $50 fuel surcharge on orders 500–900 sq ft?
+
Small orders (1–2 pallets) are the least efficient for a delivery truck. The $50 fuel surcharge covers the cost of dispatching the truck and driver for a load that doesn't fill the bed. Orders 1,200 sq ft and up don't carry the surcharge — at that size the truck is running near capacity.
Why does Tall Fescue cost more than Kentucky Bluegrass — and why is RTF more than both?
+
Tall Fescue carries a +$0.10/sq ft premium over Kentucky Bluegrass across all tiers because it's a slower-growing, harder-to-harvest variety — the deeper root system that makes it drought- and traffic-tolerant also makes it more labor-intensive to lift, palletize, and replant. RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) is priced higher again — roughly +$0.30/sq ft over standard Tall Fescue and +$0.40/sq ft over Kentucky Bluegrass — because the rhizomatous self-repairing varieties are a smaller share of the farm's acreage and the most labor-intensive cut. The calculator above applies the correct rate automatically for each variety and tier.
Is the 5% cuts-and-waste recommendation really necessary?
+
For any lawn that isn't a perfect rectangle, yes. Curves, garden bed edges, walkway transitions, and tree wells all create offcuts that can't be reused elsewhere. Ordering exactly to measured area almost always leaves the install short by a piece or two — and the farm doesn't deliver a single extra roll on a separate trip. The 5% buffer is the difference between a finished lawn and a finished lawn with bare patches.
Where do you deliver?
+
All of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York (including Westchester, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley), New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. Long Island and the Hamptons use a separate pricing model with a +$0.30/sq ft surcharge and 1,200 sq ft minimum — see the Long Island sod calculator. Standard footprint pricing on this page applies everywhere else.
How fast can I get the sod after I order?
+
Standard turnaround is 2–7 days from order to delivery. Sod is cut fresh from the farm for each order — we don't stock palletized inventory because sod has a 24–48 hour shelf life off the soil. If you have a deadline (closing date, party, contractor schedule), call ahead and we'll confirm the delivery window before you commit.
