York County is Maine's southernmost — and warmest — county, running from the sandy beach towns of Kittery, York, Ogunquit, the Kennebunks, and Old Orchard Beach inland to the farm and former mill towns of Sanford, Berwick, Buxton, and Waterboro. The coast is the mildest ground in Maine (roughly USDA zone 6a), on fast-draining sandy soil right on the salt, while inland it's a touch colder (5b–6a), more wooded, and rockier.
