Knox County sits on the western shore of Penobscot Bay — the harbor towns of Rockland, Camden, and Rockport, the St. George peninsula and Thomaston, and the bay islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven. Nearly all of it is near the water (roughly USDA zone 5b–6a), exposed to salt air off the bay, on thin, rocky coastal soil over ledge. That makes deep-rooted, salt-tolerant tall fescue and blends the natural lead, laid over a fresh topsoil base, with bluegrass reserved for sunny lawns set well back from the salt.
