Downeast Maine — Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island, Castine, and the shoreline around Acadia National Park — is among the coolest, most maritime ground we serve. Ocean fog moderates the summers, salt air reaches the coastal lots, and the soil is often thin, rocky, and acidic over granite, shaded by spruce and fir (roughly USDA zone 5a–5b). Salt-tolerant, cool-loving tall fescue and blends lead here, laid over a generous fresh topsoil base, with bluegrass kept to sunny lawns set back from the water.
