Hancock County is the heart of the Downeast coast — Mount Desert Island with Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor and Acadia National Park, the Blue Hill peninsula and Castine, Deer Isle and Stonington, and inland Ellsworth. Almost all of it is on the open coast (roughly USDA zone 5b–6a), exposed to heavy salt air, on thin, rocky, acidic soil over granite ledge. That makes deep-rooted, salt-tolerant tall fescue and blends the natural lead, laid over a fresh topsoil base, with bluegrass reserved for sunny lawns set well back from the salt.
