Sod on Eastern Long Island: Sandy Outwash, Salt Air & a Mild Maritime Climate
Suffolk County is the sandy end of Long Island — fast-draining glacial outwash across the South Fork (Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Montauk, Sagaponack), the North Fork farm and vineyard country, and the Central Pine Barrens in between. The ocean and bays keep it among the region's mildest ground (roughly USDA zone 7a–7b), but that sandy soil drains hard and the salt air reaches inland, so we lead with deep-rooted, salt-tolerant tall fescue and blends laid over a fresh topsoil base that holds water and nutrients.
The North Shore estate corridor — Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Harbor — is hillier and more wooded over glacial moraine, where blends and fescue carry the shade. Does Long Island's sandy soil need topsoil before sod?
