Shelter Island sits in the Peconic between the North and South Forks, reachable only by ferry — the North Ferry from Greenport and the South Ferry from North Haven near Sag Harbor. That single fact drives every install here: pallets ride the boat, so the delivery and the lay are scheduled together around the ferry. The island runs from the Shelter Island Heights Victorian cottages and the Center, out to Dering Harbor, Ram Island, Hay Beach, and Silver Beach, with the whole protected south third given over to the Mashomack Preserve. Soils are wooded glacial moraine with sandy stretches, exposure is the gentler Peconic and Gardiners Bay rather than open Atlantic, and the mature tree canopy means a lot of these lawns are shade lawns.
CT Sod has been delivering and installing sod across the East End for years. Pallets are cut to order at the farm the morning of your install, ferried across the same day, placed exactly where you need them by all-terrain forklift, and laid by crews whose only job is sod, not general landscaping.
Every pallet rides the North Ferry from Greenport or the South Ferry from North Haven. We book the ferry window into your install date so the sod is cut that morning, crosses the same day, and goes down fresh — not stockpiled on the dock waiting for a boat.
Your sod is cut at the farm the morning of installation and ferried straight to the job. Fresh sod establishes faster and handles transplant stress far better than a pallet that's been sitting — which matters even more when there's a boat ride in the middle.
Shelter Island Heights, the Center, Dering Harbor, Ram Island, Hay Beach, Silver Beach, and the lanes around the Mashomack Preserve — we install across all of it and scope the ferry, the drive access, and the shade variety call before we get there.
Much of the island sits under mature canopy, and the bay exposure is gentler than the open-ocean South Fork. We lean toward shade-tolerant tall fescue blends and match the variety to your exact light and site during the quote.
On Shelter Island we run install-only — you (or your landscaper) handle the prep, and our crew shows up with the sod and lays it tight. The Long Island & Hamptons surcharge applies on orders over 1,200 sq ft; full-service prep + install is available across CT and Westchester.

These videos came in four years after we installed tall fescue across a multi-acre property in Water Mill — on the South Fork, a short hop across the bay from Shelter Island — sent unprompted by the customer. Walkthrough of a $13.95 million waterfront estate built by Build Well Development on Tara Rd in Montauk that we sodded. The pool area and yard you see is sod we redid for free before the showing — sprinklers failed to kick on after install and burned out the first lay, so we hauled it away and re-laid it on our dime.
