Nantucket's lawns face some of the harshest conditions we work in: constant salt-laden wind, frequent summer fog, and sandy, often acidic moorland soil that's low in organic matter. The ocean keeps the island surprisingly mild — roughly USDA zone 7a — but the exposure is relentless, which is why we lead with deep-rooted, salt-tolerant tall fescue and fescue blends and build up a quality topsoil base before laying sod. Deep, consistent watering through establishment is essential in fast-draining island sand.
The other reality is logistics: everything reaches the island by ferry and freight barge, so sod deliveries and installs have to be planned well ahead — especially in the busy summer stretch when the boats are full.
