Hampden County straddles the Connecticut River Valley — the Pioneer Valley — where the valley floor around Springfield, Holyoke, Chicopee, and Westfield holds some of New England's most fertile soil and sits in a milder pocket (roughly USDA zone 6a–6b) than the surrounding hills.
