8,000 Sq Ft Westport Sod Installation — Saving Fresh-Cut Sod

Project update — August 27, 2026. The sod is cut and the clock is running: 8,000 square feet of fresh Kentucky bluegrass mix goes down in Westport on Friday, August 28 — a full site prep, grading, and installation compressed into a single day. The dated work log will grow at the bottom of this page as the day unfolds.

This one is a first for us — and it is exactly the kind of job nobody in this business documents. On Thursday afternoon our farm crew cut 8,000 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass sod mix for a Friday delivery that was no longer happening. The order should have come off the cutting board and did not. It was not the customer's fault; it simply slipped past us.

Fresh-cut sod is completely perishable. Stacked on pallets in late-August heat, the window to get it on the ground is measured in hours — this sod had to be installed Friday or it would be lost. So at 4 p.m. on a Thursday, we had a full cutting of premium sod, no destination, and one working day to find it a home.

Dozens of Calls Before the Right One

We started dialing. Current customers. Landscapers we deliver to every week. Garden centers. Anyone mid-project who could take fresh sod a day early — we even looked at pulling our own scheduled installs forward. Nothing fit; 8,000 square feet is a lot of lawn to place overnight.

Then we called a homeowner in Westport, Connecticut we had quoted the week before. Their project needed serious ground prep and grading ahead of any sod — work we normally schedule as separate visits. The 4 p.m. offer: we bring the entire package tomorrow — machines, operators, fresh screened topsoil, finish grading, and installation — in one day, at a significant discount, and sod that was already cut and ready goes onto their lawn instead of into a compost row.

Their first question was the right one: what kind of sod is it? A premium mix of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue — the cutting this order happened to catch, and a good fit for a full-sun Fairfield County backyard like this one. Their honest hesitation: the yard needed a lot of ground prep and grading — was that really something we wanted to sign up for on no notice? It is. Site prep is half of what we do. We sent over our 11,000 square foot Greenwich Central Middle School installation, and the answer came back: see you in the morning.

One More Twist: The Pool Company Is Not Done

Hours after agreeing, the homeowner had a real concern. The pool company building the new pool is not finished — their crews will be back next week, working right beside whatever lawn we install. Would it be smarter to push the sod job off until they are done?

Normally, maybe. But by Thursday evening this job existed as a fully assembled machine: topsoil ordered, trucking routed, two machines scheduled, a crew booked — and the sod itself does not get a week. So we made a commitment we have never made before: we install Friday, and the customer does not pay a penny until the pool company finishes next week and we have come back and repaired whatever damage their crews do to the finished lawn. Not a normal arrangement — but this was not a normal situation, and it was the arrangement that saved the sod.

The Site, the Night Before

The photo at the top of this page is the backyard as it sits tonight: the new pool behind orange safety fencing, fresh retaining walls, and roughly 8,000 square feet of bare, rutted subgrade that has spent the summer as a construction zone. The pool build belongs to the pool contractor. Our scope is everything the lawn needs — stripping and grading the rough ground, bringing in approximately 80 yards of screened topsoil, cutting a finish grade, and laying fresh sod edge to edge.

What Friday Looks Like

Two machines on site from the morning. Topsoil trucks cycling in. A sod delivery timed behind the grading, and a full crew laying rolls as the finish grade comes off the rake. We are honest about one thing: we are not totally sure yet exactly how much material these grades will take — approximately 80 yards is the working figure, and the real totals, photos, and video will be added to this page as the day unfolds.

If you are in Westport, this is what our sod installation in Westport looks like when everything has to happen at once — and if you have your own crew and only need the sod itself, Westport sod delivery runs on the same fresh-cut standard.

Updates Will Stay on This Page

This post is a live record, the same way we documented our 7,000 square foot New Canaan installation day by day through its paving deadline. Friday's work log — the real soil totals, progress photos, and the finished lawn — will be added here as it happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did CT Sod install 8,000 square feet of sod in Westport on one day of notice?+
An order that should have come off the cutting schedule slipped past us, and 8,000 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass mix was cut Thursday afternoon for a delivery that was no longer happening. Fresh-cut sod is perishable, so rather than let it go to waste, CT Sod offered a Westport customer we had recently quoted a significant discount to complete their full prep and installation the very next day.
Is the swimming pool part of CT Sod's scope on this Westport project?+
No. The pool is being built by a separate pool company on its own schedule. CT Sod's scope is the lawn: stripping and grading, screened topsoil, finish grade, and sod installation. When the pool company returns to finish its work, CT Sod will come back and repair any areas of the new lawn their crews disturb.
What sod blend is being installed at this Westport property?+
A premium Kentucky bluegrass mix of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue, cut fresh at the farm Thursday afternoon for Friday installation.
Can a lawn really be prepped and sodded in a single day?+
With the right equipment and crew, yes. This project runs two machines, approximately 80 yards of screened topsoil, and a full installation crew in one compressed day. Site prep and installation are normally scheduled as separate visits; they were combined here to save the fresh-cut sod.

If you are looking for sod in the New England area this is the place to go. My son and his family recently moved to Claremont NH and needed sod. Due to his busy schedule and being new to the area and not being able to find a local installer I planned a trip from NC to install it for him. The ordering process was easy and I believe Kayla was helpful on the phone explaining different grass options and what would work best for the area. She scheduled the sod delivery about a month out for me which allowed me to time plan my short weekend trip. On delivery day things did not go as planned due to situations beyond CT Sod’s control. I was updated by Sean throughout the day regarding the issues and his plans to make it happen. Unfortunately it did not. Sean promised to make it right and realized I had a made a special trip up for the install. I did not get to install sod that weekend but Sean and CT Sod went above and beyond to make the issue right. Sod was delivered and installed a few days after I arrived home and the quality and customer service was above and beyond. The sod looked so good people who were driving by have been inquiring to my son about where it was from and commenting how great it looks. Shout out to CT Sod for making a bad situation into a great one. As a general contractor in NC I wish we had vendors like these folks who do the right thing without being asked!!!

We had a great experience with CT Sod. After our pool installation, our yard needed significant cleanup and restoration. Their team did an excellent job prepping the area with quality topsoil and installing the new sod. They were professional, friendly, and especially careful working around our brand-new pool and patio. Communication was easy throughout the process via text, and they took the time to recommend the right type of sod specifically for the conditions in our yard. The finished lawn exceeded our expectations and looks fantastic. They also provided great value—we were able to use the extra topsoil and sod to improve other areas of our property. Overall, very happy with the quality of the work and the entire experience with CT Sod.

I recently dealt with Sean and Kayla to set up a sod installation around a new pool - couldn’t be happier with the process, price, and results. Highly recommend CT Sod - you won’t be disappointed with this company. I snapped this while the guys were working. In 4 hours they almost had the whole 5,000 square feet of fresh Kentucky Bluegrass installed. Results speak for themselves.
