Sussex County is the highland Skylands of northwestern New Jersey — the Kittatinny Mountains and Ridge, the freshwater lake communities of Lake Hopatcong, Sparta's Lake Mohawk, and Culvers Lake, and the ski and resort country around Vernon. It's the coldest, hilliest corner of the state (roughly USDA zone 5b–6a) on thin, rocky, fast-draining upland soil, with heavy tree cover on the slopes. There's no coastal salt anywhere here, and the lakes are freshwater, so salt tolerance is not a factor — the real challenges are shade, slope, rock, and cold.
