
Sod will not grow over existing grass. Laid on a living lawn, it looks finished for a week or two. Then the seams open, the old grass and weeds push through, the surface settles unevenly as the buried turf rots, and the whole thing thins out by the end of its first summer. The roots never reach soil, so there is nothing to rescue once it starts.

Quick Answers
- Can you lay sod over existing grass? No. Sod needs firm contact with bare, loosened soil. Over living grass, roots stop at the old canopy and thatch, the buried lawn decomposes into an uneven layer, and the old grass grows through the seams. Expect failure within one season. [Estimated.]
- Does it matter if I mow the old grass short first? No. Scalping helps only after the lawn is dead. A living lawn cut to an inch is still a living lawn.
- What is the one exception? A lawn that is already dead, thin, and scalped, with the loose debris raked off and the top two to three inches of soil roughed up. At that point it is not "sod over grass," it is minimal prep, and it works only if the soil underneath is decent.
- Does my lawn actually need replacing? Drop a one-foot frame at ten spots and count. Seven or more frames of good grass, renovate. Four or fewer, replace. The method is below. [Estimated thresholds.]
- How do I remove old grass before sod? A sod cutter (same day), spray and wait (about 7 to 14 days), scalp and till after a kill, or smother and solarize (weeks, and too slow for fall). [Estimated timings.]

A Few Terms Used in This Guide

What Happens When Sod Goes Down Over Living Grass
Five things go wrong at once, which is why the usual fixes, more water, more fertilizer, rolling it again, do nothing.
The roots never reach soil. Sod is harvested with roughly half an inch to an inch of soil and roots under the grass. [Estimated.] Those roots have to push into mineral soil within days. Laid on a lawn, they meet grass blades, crowns, and thatch: a spongy organic mat that holds water on top and dries out from below. Roots grow into thatch about as well as they grow into a doormat. Lift a corner at week three and the sod comes up in one piece with white roots that went nowhere.
The old lawn keeps growing. Grass under sod is dark, not dead. Kentucky bluegrass sends rhizomes sideways toward the nearest light, which is the seam. Bentgrass, nimblewill, quackgrass, nutsedge, ground ivy, and violets do the same thing faster. Within three to six weeks the seams turn a different shade of green and the old lawn is back on top of the new one. [Estimated.]
The buried turf rots and the surface settles. Two to four inches of grass and thatch compress, die, and decompose. As they break down, the sod above them drops, but not evenly. Low spots appear where the old growth was thickest, seams pull apart, and water pools. The new lawn inherits the topography of the old one, plus dips.
The grade comes up two to three inches. Sod is about an inch and a half to two inches thick. On top of an existing lawn it sits two to three inches higher than it should, above walks, patios, and bed edges. Water sheds off instead of soaking in, the edges dry out and die, and the mower scalps the high spots. The target is a finish grade about an inch below hard edges, and you cannot get there without taking something out. See how thick sod is for the numbers.
Disease moves in. The decomposing layer stays wet, the sod above it stays wet, and the still air trapped between them is exactly what brown patch, pythium, and leaf spot want. Watering more to "help it root" makes it worse.

A quick check when someone is convinced the sod was bad: if the same sod is rooted and dense on a section that was stripped and prepped, the problem is the base, not the sod, the water, or the grass type.
The One Case Where Laying Over an Old Lawn Works
There is one, and it is narrower than people want it to be.
A lawn that is dead, meaning brown to the crown and pulling up with no resistance, and thin, scalped as low as the mower goes, with the loose debris raked off and the top two to three inches of soil roughed up, gives sod roughly what bare soil gives it: contact, loosened mineral soil, and no living competition. That is not sod over grass. It is the minimum prep from can I just lay sod over dirt, applied to a lawn that has already been killed.
It works only when all of these are true:
- The kill is complete. Sprayed 7 to 14 days earlier and browned all the way through, with a second pass on anything that stayed green. [Estimated.]
- The thatch is under about half an inch. More than that and you rent a dethatcher or run a sod cutter set shallow. [Estimated.]
- The old lawn was thin. A dead but dense lawn is still two inches of organic material.
- The grade has room. A scalped dead lawn still adds roughly half an inch. If the edges were already flush with the walks, you will finish high. [Estimated.]

Replace It, or Fix It?
Not every bad lawn needs to be replaced, and a sod company should be willing to say so.
The rule of thumb: if most of the lawn is desirable grass, fix it in place. Core aerate, overseed in early fall, correct the pH, and sort out the watering. It costs time and patience, not a tear-out. If most of it is grass you would not keep, strip it and sod. Overseeding into a lawn that is mostly weeds is seeding a weed bed. The test in the next section replaces "most" with a number.

Count Before You Decide: The Ten-Frame Test
Nobody can judge a lawn from the driveway. The bad corner by the maple is what you notice; the sixty percent that is fine is what you walk past. Ten minutes with a square of cardboard gives you a number instead of a feeling.
- 1. Make a one-foot square. A cardboard cutout, four pieces of scrap wood, or a bent coat hanger all work. A hula hoop is fine too; it is about three square feet, which changes nothing below.
- 2. Drop it at ten spots spread across the whole lawn, not just the bad areas. Walk a zigzag and drop it without looking down.
- 3. At each spot, call the square by whatever covers more than half of it: grass you would keep, weeds, or bare soil and moss.
- 4. Before you count a square as "grass," pull one plant and look at it. Creeping bentgrass, quackgrass, nimblewill, and rough bluegrass are grass, but they are not grass you would keep, and they do not count.
- 5. Tally the ten.

Any of these at more than a couple of frames is a full kill and removal, not an overseed.
How to Remove the Old Lawn: Four Methods

On spraying. A non-selective herbicide works on a lawn that is actively growing, on a warm, dry day, and it needs 7 to 14 days to reach the roots and turn everything brown. [Estimated.] Hit survivors with a second pass. Then scalp and rake, or run the cutter. Follow the label, keep people and pets off until it dries, and keep it away from water and storm drains. "Organic" burn-down products kill the tops and leave the roots of perennial grasses and weeds alive, which is fine for a seedling and useless on quackgrass.
On tilling a live lawn. This is the most common DIY shortcut and the worst option on the list. A rototiller chops rhizomes and stolons into hundreds of pieces, and each piece is a new plant. Quackgrass and bentgrass come back thicker than before. It also brings buried weed seed to the surface and fluffs the soil so it settles into dips under the sod. Till only after a complete kill or after the turf has been stripped, then firm and grade.
On the sod cutter. Set it deep enough to take the crowns and thatch, usually an inch to an inch and a half, and no deeper than that unless you are lowering the grade on purpose. Every extra half inch is topsoil you paid for going into a dumpster. Under trees, do not run it inside the drip line at all; see the tree section of the shade guide.
What Comes Out, What Goes Back In: The Removal Calculator
The part of a lawn replacement that surprises people is not the sod. It is the weight of what leaves. Turf stripped at an inch and a half is soil, roots, and water, and a small front lawn fills a dump trailer. Estimates. Weight varies with soil moisture and cut depth. Container limits vary by hauler. Sod is cut to order and must go down the day it arrives, so book the delivery for the day the prep finishes.
Two things the calculator cannot know: what your hauler charges by the ton, and what is under your lawn. If the first two frames of the ten-frame test came up on compacted fill, add topsoil at the high end. If the lawn is already flush with the walks, the sod cutter's inch and a half is doing double duty, dropping the grade and removing the turf, and you will add less back.
The Grade Problem
Removal is also how the grade gets fixed, and it is the part most people skip.
The finish grade under sod should sit about an inch below walks, patios, driveway edges, and bed borders, so the sod finishes flush and water runs across it instead of off it. [Estimated.] A sod cutter takes out an inch or two, which is usually about right, and then topsoil brings the surface back to grade with a slope away from the house. This is where a tired lawn's dips and puddles finally get corrected, because it is the only moment the soil is exposed.
Ideal topsoil is four to six inches of quality screened material worked into the existing soil. Two inches works over a good base and fails over compacted fill. The full numbers are in how deep topsoil should be for sod.
Two things to do while the soil is open: pull a soil test, and fix the pH before the sod goes down rather than after. See soil pH and sod. If the lawn has failed more than once on the same ground, the ground is the problem, and soil biology explains why.
A Realistic Replacement Timeline
Sod is cut to order and needs to go down the day it arrives, so the removal and prep schedule drives the delivery date, not the other way around.

The September math in the Northeast: a spray started in the first half of September puts sod down in early October, inside the best window of the year. What This Looks Like on Real Jobs
Four of our own lawns where the old one came out, and why.
Westbrook, CT: 6,000 square feet, a tired old lawn stripped and tilled in one workflow

This is the tilling version of removal, done in the right order by a machine built for it. The lawn was a patchwork of bare spots, broadleaf weeds, and thinned-out turf, past the point where a reseed would fix anything, so it came out. The tiller's first, shallow pass breaks the turf layer apart and lifts the grass crowns out of the soil. Only then do the deeper passes pull the chopped material down into the top 2 to 4 inches and break up the compaction the old lawn was sitting on. By the end of the machine work the old lawn is gone as a continuous layer, which is the difference between removing a lawn this way and the DIY mistake of churning a living lawn into pieces and sodding straight over them. The soil that came up was dark and crumbly, good enough to reuse in place, so no new topsoil was trucked in at all.

The edges along the patio were hand-raked to a finish grade so the sod would land flush against the flagstone. The whole 6,000 square feet was graded and staged for next-day delivery, which is the rhythm every replacement should follow: prep finishes, sod arrives the next morning, sod goes down the day it arrives.

Milford, CT: 7,000 square feet, a thin, weedy front lawn replaced with tall fescue

This front lawn would have scored two or three frames of grass out of ten. Thin, weedy, and patchy, more crabgrass and bare dirt than turf, sitting up against a granite Belgian-block curb and the public sidewalk, which meant the grade had to drop before anything went down. It was stripped and regraded, about 7,000 square feet front and back.

Notice the graded bed sits below the curb. That drop is what lets the finished sod meet the sidewalk flush instead of rolling over it and drying out along the edge.

Milford, CT: 1,500 square feet, dead machine routes stripped the same day

A patio crew's equipment ran the same side-yard route all summer and killed an otherwise good lawn in the July heat. Dead grass, thin, and technically the exception where you could scalp and lay over. It still came out, because months of machine traffic had compacted the soil under it and left the routes worn into ruts below the surrounding lawn. The dead turf was stripped, the routes were regraded, and 1,500 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass went down the same day.

Cambridge, MA: a patchy backyard that was more path than lawn

A narrow city backyard with a stepping-stone path, weedy patches, and a bare compacted strip along the foundation. The ten-frame test is not close here. The old turf and the stepping stones came out, three inches of fresh screened topsoil went down over the compacted fill, the yard was graded to fall away from the foundation, and RTF sod went in.

Sod Over Weeds, Moss, Dead Grass, and Other Special Cases
Over weeds. Same answer, for the same reasons. Annual weeds like crabgrass die at frost, but their seed bank does not, and dense sod is the best crabgrass control there is, once it is rooted into soil. Perennial weeds, clover, violets, ground ivy, dandelion, plantain, need a kill or a cut first, or they come up between the seams.
Over moss. Moss is a symptom, not a lawn. It means shade, moisture, compaction, or low pH, often all four. Scrape it off, fix the cause, then prep the soil. If the spot gets under about two hours of direct sun, sod is the wrong answer; the shade guide covers what to do instead.
Over dead grass. This is the one exception, with the conditions above. "Dead" means brown to the crown and pulls up freely. A lawn sprayed three days ago is dying, not dead, and its roots still occupy the soil.
Over an old lawn under trees. Do not rototill inside the drip line. Use a flat shovel or a sod cutter set shallow, keep added soil to an inch or two over the roots, and leave the root flare exposed. The full method is in installing sod under trees.
Over a lawn that grubs destroyed. If the old lawn peeled up like a rug, the grubs are still in the soil and will do the same thing to the new sod. Deal with them before it goes down. See the guide to every sod problem.
Over a lawn with an irrigation system. Flag every head and the main lines before a sod cutter goes anywhere near them. Lower the heads if the grade is dropping.
After a pre-emergent. Pre-emergent herbicides stop seed from germinating, and sod is not seed, so most are not a problem for rooting. Check the label for any waiting period before laying sod. [Verify against the product label.]
Mistakes We See
- Laying sod on a lawn that was sprayed a few days ago. It is dying, not dead. Wait for brown.
- Tilling a live lawn. See above. It is the fastest way to guarantee quackgrass.
- Skipping the grade drop, so the new lawn sits an inch or two above the walks and dries out at every edge.
- Cutting too deep and hauling the good topsoil away with the sod.
- Rototilling under trees.
- Overseeding a lawn that scored three frames out of ten and expecting a lawn.
- Not looking at the light. A lawn that failed under a maple will fail again for the same reason. Count the sun hours before ordering.
When Sod Is the Wrong Answer
- Seven or more frames of good grass out of ten. Aerate and overseed this fall instead. [Estimated threshold.]
- A big open lot, a tight budget, and no deadline. Hydroseeding is the better spend.
- Under about two hours of direct sun. Mulch, groundcover, or moss. The shade guide has the list.
- The lawn has failed twice on the same ground with nothing changed. Fix the drainage, the compaction, or the soil before buying grass a third time.
The Bottom Line
- Sod over living grass fails. The roots stop at the thatch, the old lawn grows through the seams, the buried turf rots into dips, and the grade ends up two to three inches too high. [Estimated.]
- The one exception is a dead, thin, scalped lawn with the debris raked off and the soil roughed up, on decent soil, with room in the grade. That is minimal prep, not a shortcut.
