Westerly and the historic Watch Hill summer colony sit on Rhode Island's southwestern oceanfront, along Block Island Sound and the Misquamicut beaches. It's mild (roughly USDA zone 7a) but right on the salt, on sandy coastal soil that drains fast. That makes deep-rooted, salt-tolerant tall fescue and blends the natural lead — laid over a fresh topsoil base that holds water in the sand — with bluegrass kept to irrigated lawns set back from the beach.
