Sod Installation in New Canaan, CT

New Canaan properties — from West School blocks to the back-country estate parcels off Smith Ridge and Ponus Ridge — set a high bar for finished landscape work. The look depends as much on what's under the sod as what's on top: proper grading, clean seams, and turf that's still farm-fresh when it goes down.

CT Sod has been delivering and installing sod across New Canaan and lower Fairfield County for over 30 years. Pallets are cut to order at the farm the morning of your install, placed exactly where you need them by all-terrain forklift, and laid by crews whose only job is sod — not general landscaping.

Why Property Owners in New Canaan Choose CT Sod

Farm-Cut, Same-Day Sod

Your sod is cut at the farm the morning of installation — never stockpiled. Fresh sod establishes faster and handles transplant stress more reliably than sod that's been sitting on a pallet.

Sod-Specialist Install Crews

Our install team lays sod nearly every day across Fairfield County. Tight seams, proper grading transitions, and a finished surface that reads clean from the curb.

All-Terrain Forklift Placement

Steep driveways, narrow estate lanes, side-yard access — our forklifts place pallets exactly where the crew needs them. No double-handling, no dragging across finished hardscape.

Two Service Options

Choose install-only if you (or your landscaper) handle the prep, or full-service turnkey including site prep. Both are available in New Canaan and across CT + Westchester.

Written Quote Before Work Starts

Every install is scoped per project — square footage, access, prep needs, drainage. You get a written quote with the work and inclusions spelled out before crews are scheduled. No surprises mid-job.

Over 30 Years on Fairfield County Properties

From front-yard re-sods to estate-scale projects, we've worked nearly every block in New Canaan, Darien, Greenwich, and Westport. We know the access constraints before we get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sod Installation in New Canaan

How long does a sod installation take in New Canaan?

Most residential installs finish in a single day. A typical 3,000–6,000 sq ft front-yard install is laid the same morning the pallets arrive. Larger estate-scale jobs (15,000+ sq ft) may run 2–3 days depending on access, grading, and crew size. We’ll give you a firm timeline as part of your written quote.

What do I need to do before the install crew arrives?

If we’re install-only: have the site fully prepped — old turf removed, 4–6 inches of clean topsoil added, area graded smooth, raked, and lightly rolled. Sprinklers should be flagged or shut off. Driveway and pallet drop area cleared for the forklift. If we’re full-service, we handle all of this — you just need to make sure we can access the property.

What if my yard has weeds, dead grass, or a steep slope?

All of these are normal. Weeds and dead turf get stripped and disposed of during prep. Slopes are graded for drainage and water-retention; on steeper grades we can stake the sod through the establishment period. We assess all of this during the site walk-through so the quote reflects what your specific yard actually needs.

Do you handle drainage and irrigation?

We handle grading for surface drainage as part of full-service prep — pitching the soil so water flows away from the house and off the lawn cleanly. We do not install French drains, dry wells, or in-ground irrigation systems; those are specialist trades and we’ll refer you to local pros we trust if you need them. New sod has to be watered heavily for the first 2–3 weeks, so an existing irrigation system or a temporary hose-and-sprinkler plan needs to be in place before we lay sod.

When can I walk on my new sod?

Stay off it for the first 2–3 weeks while the roots knit into the soil below. Light foot traffic (checking sprinkler coverage, spot-watering dry seams) is fine. Avoid running, kids, pets, furniture, and anything heavy until you can grip a corner of sod and feel resistance — that’s the root system holding.

When can I mow my new sod?

Usually 14–21 days after installation, once the sod is firmly rooted. First cut should take off no more than the top third of the blade with a sharp mower blade, and the ground should be firm — not soggy — so the mower doesn’t rut the new lawn. We’ll leave a one-page care sheet with your install.

What’s included in your sod install vs. what a landscaper does?

We’re sod specialists, not full-service landscapers. We deliver fresh farm-cut sod, do prep work specifically for sod (stripping old turf, topsoil, grading, rolling), and lay the sod with tight seams by a crew that does this nearly every day. We don’t handle hardscape, plantings, irrigation install, tree work, or ongoing lawn maintenance. If your project needs those, hire a landscaper for the full job and we’ll work as the sod supplier — many landscapers in New Canaan already do this with us.
