No-Mow Sod — Mow Twice a Year, Not Twice a Week

A 90% fine fescue blend that grows low, slow, and dense — the lawn for shaded yards, slopes, cottage properties, and every stretch of grass you are tired of mowing. Cut fresh to order at the farm, delivered anywhere in our 8-state footprint, installed by our own crews if you want it turnkey. New to fine fescue? Start with our fine fescue shade guide and the Chewings fescue deep-dive.

01Three looks, one grass — and an honest expectation

What “No-Mow” Actually Means

“No-mow” is the industry name for fine fescue turf — grasses that top out low, grow slowly, and need a fraction of the water and fertilizer a conventional lawn drinks. It is not a magic lawn that freezes at two inches. It is a lawn that gives you a choice of three looks: leave it uncut for a soft, flowing meadow; cut it once or twice a year for a tidy meadow-lawn (the classic no-mow look); or mow it monthly at 3.5–4 inches for a fine-bladed conventional lawn on a quarter of the mowing.

The reason it works is the species. Fine fescues carry the narrowest blades of any cool-season turf, grow more sideways than up, and are the only lawn grasses that genuinely prefer lean soil and low fertility. That is also why they are the standard answer for deep shade — the same blend that skips the weekly mow holds density at 2–3 hours of direct sun, where bluegrass and tall fescue give up. Our shade sod guide covers that side of the story.

The honest trade-offs: it is a light-to-moderate traffic lawn, not a sports field; it prefers dry feet, so soggy low spots need drainage work first; and in a hot, rainless August it will go straw-tan and dormant unless you water — then green back up on its own in September. If those trade-offs fit the property, nothing else comes close on maintenance.

02Five named cultivars — not a generic seed mix

The Exact Blend We Supply

This is the current cultivar composition of the no-mow sod we deliver, grown for us by the same established Northeast producers as our other varieties. Every component is a named, turf-trial-evaluated cultivar — ask us for the spec sheet if you are matching an architect’s or town’s planting spec.

40%HarpoonHard Fescue

The backbone. Hard fescue is the toughest of the fine fescues — lowest water demand, lowest fertility demand, and the slowest vertical growth in the blend. It is the reason the lawn holds its look between cuts.

20%EugeneCreeping Red Fescue

The spreader. Creeping red is the only grass in this blend with rhizomes, so it creeps sideways to knit seams and fill thin spots — the self-repair component of the blend.

15%CarsonChewings Fescue

Density. Chewings fescue tillers harder than any other fine fescue, packing blades tightly so the surface reads as a lawn, not a thin meadow.

15%HoodChewings Fescue

A second Chewings cultivar so the density component never rides on one genetic line — if disease pressure hits one cultivar, the other holds.

10%KryptonKentucky Bluegrass

The harvest anchor. A small bluegrass fraction ties the root zone together so the sod cuts, rolls, and ships in one piece — the same reason nearly all fescue sod carries some KBG.

Why a blend instead of one species? Because no single fine fescue does everything — hard fescue brings the toughness, creeping red the self-repair, Chewings the density. Blending lets each species carry the section of your yard it is best at, which is exactly how the best fine fescue turf has been specified for decades.

Where No-Mow Sod Shines — And Where to Skip It

Right at home

  • Shaded yards — holds a lawn at 2–3 hours of direct sun, where every other sod we carry thins out.
  • Slopes, banks & back-of-property — the grass you never want to drag a mower across again.
  • Cottages & second homes — a lawn that looks kept when nobody has been there to keep it.
  • Meadow-style landscapes — uncut, it flowers into a soft meadow that fits naturalized planting plans.
  • Low-water properties — no irrigation system required once established.
  • Variety zoning on larger lots — bluegrass on the showcase lawn, no-mow on the edges. One delivery, two maintenance schedules.

Skip it for

  • Sports-level traffic — daily ball games and dog runs wear paths into fine fescue. That job belongs to tall fescue or RTF.
  • The formal striped look — a mowed-and-striped estate lawn is Kentucky Bluegrass territory.
  • Wet, poorly drained ground — fine fescue wants dry feet. Fix the drainage first or pick a different grass.
  • Anyone expecting zero care — it still needs establishment watering and a cut or two a year. Less is not none.
04Cut when you order it — plan the timeline with us

How Special Order Works

Bluegrass and tall fescue move every week, so the farm always has them coming off the field. Fine fescue is cut to order — which means no-mow sod is a phone call first, not a checkout button.

  1. 1.Tell us the project. Square footage, town, and when you want grass down — by phone at (203) 806-4086 or the quote form.
  2. 2.We confirm the cut date. We schedule your order with the grower and lock the price — lead time varies by season, so earlier is always easier.
  3. 3.It ships fresh, same as everything we sell. Cut, rolled, and on the truck to your driveway — anywhere in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Maine.
  4. 4.You lay it, or we do. Delivery-only for DIY and landscaper jobs, or a full turnkey install — prep, install, and water-in by our crews.
05Priced like our tall fescue — no specialty markup

What No-Mow Sod Costs

Simple: no-mow runs at the same delivered rate as our Black Beauty Tall Fescue. Same flat-rate small orders, same per-square-foot volume tiers, same delivery footprint — the current numbers are on the sod pricing page under the tall fescue column. Installation is quoted per job on top, exactly like our other varieties.

Because it is cut to order, send the square footage and town with your request and we will come back with one number — sod, delivery, and install if you want it — plus the cut date. Request a quote and mention no-mow.

06Three weeks of attention, then the easiest lawn you'll own

After It's Down

New no-mow sod establishes like any other sod: daily watering for the first 2–3 weeks until the roots knit in, then taper off. That establishment window is the one time this grass asks for real attention — skip it and the honest low-maintenance story never gets a chance to start.

After that, the schedule collapses. Water only through genuine drought (or let it go summer-dormant and green back up in fall — its natural rhythm). Feed lightly once a year at most; fine fescue on lean soil outcompetes weeds better than fine fescue that has been pushed with nitrogen. And mow on whichever of the three schedules fits the look you want — never, twice a year, or monthly at 3.5–4 inches.

08The questions we get most

No-Mow Sod FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is "no-mow" literally no mowing, ever?
Honest answer: it's your choice of three looks. Leave it completely uncut and it grows into a soft, knee-high meadow that flowers seed heads in early summer. Cut it once or twice a year (late spring and late fall) and it stays a tidy, rolling meadow lawn — that's how most people run it. Or mow it monthly at 3.5–4 inches and it reads as a conventional, fine-bladed lawn on a fraction of the usual mowing. What it never needs is the weekly cut a bluegrass or tall fescue lawn demands.
How much sun does no-mow sod need?
Fine fescue is the most shade-tolerant cool-season turf there is — it holds where lawns get as little as 2–3 hours of direct sun, which is exactly where bluegrass and tall fescue thin out. It also does fine in full sun on lean, well-drained soil. The one condition it genuinely hates is wet, poorly drained ground; for soggy areas we'll steer you to a different answer rather than sell you sod that fails.
Can kids and dogs play on it?
Light and moderate foot traffic is fine — walking paths, occasional play, garden strolling. It is not a sports lawn, and a daily dog-run line will wear a visible path into it. For high-traffic family yards we point you to tall fescue or RTF instead; plenty of properties run both, with no-mow on the slopes and edges and a tougher variety where the action is.
Why is no-mow sod special order?
Because demand is steadier for bluegrass and tall fescue, the farm cuts fine fescue to order rather than holding it on the shelf. You tell us the square footage and your timeline, we confirm the cut date with the grower, and it ships fresh the same way all our sod does. Lead time varies by season, so the earlier you call, the easier the scheduling.
What does no-mow sod cost?
It runs at the same delivered rate as our Black Beauty Tall Fescue — same tier table, same delivery footprint. See the tall fescue tiers on our pricing page for the current numbers, then send us your square footage and town and we'll confirm price and cut timing in one quote.
Do you install no-mow sod, or deliver only?
Both. Our crews handle the full job — old-lawn removal, topsoil, grading, install, and water-in — or we deliver fresh-cut pallets and you (or your landscaper) lay it. Fine fescue installs exactly like our other sod; the difference is what happens after it roots, which is mostly nothing.
How do I care for it after installation?
The first 2–3 weeks are the same as any new sod: water daily so the roots knit into the soil. After establishment, it becomes the lowest-input lawn we sell — little to no summer watering (in a hot, dry stretch it goes straw-tan and dormant, then greens back up in fall), at most one light feeding a year, and no more than that. Over-fertilizing fine fescue actually works against it.

We had a great experience with CT Sod. After our pool installation, our yard needed significant cleanup and restoration. Their team did an excellent job prepping the area with quality topsoil and installing the new sod. They were professional, friendly, and especially careful working around our brand-new pool and patio. Communication was easy throughout the process via text, and they took the time to recommend the right type of sod specifically for the conditions in our yard. The finished lawn exceeded our expectations and looks fantastic. They also provided great value—we were able to use the extra topsoil and sod to improve other areas of our property. Overall, very happy with the quality of the work and the entire experience with CT Sod.
