The Middlesex County shoreline is the lower Connecticut River and its Long Island Sound coast — Old Saybrook and Essex at the river mouth, plus Clinton and Westbrook along the Sound, a landscape of tidal salt marshes, sandy coves, and historic village centers. It's mild for the region (roughly USDA zone 7a) but right on the salt, on sandy and sometimes rocky coastal soil. That makes deep-rooted, salt-tolerant tall fescue and blends the natural lead, laid over a fresh topsoil base, with bluegrass reserved for sunny lawns set well back from the water.
