Portsmouth covers the north end of Aquidneck Island, reached across the bay by the bridges that tie the island to the mainland and to Tiverton. It is the greenest of the three island towns, with more elbow room than Newport and Middletown — larger lots, working farm fields, orchards, and stretches of woods threaded with the old stone walls that mark generations of island farming.
