Sod Varieties for Block Island Installs

Block Island (the town of New Shoreham) sits twelve miles out in the Atlantic — treeless, windswept, and salted on every side, the most exposed ground we serve. Salt tolerance comes first:

Black Beauty Tall Fescue sod

Black Beauty Tall Fescue

Deep-Rooted
Min sun: 4+ hrs Shade: Medium

Deep roots (2–3 ft), drought tolerance, refined look. Strong choice for partial-shade or lower-maintenance sites.

The essential choice out here — tall fescue's deep roots give it the best shot against constant salt wind off the open Atlantic and the island's sandy, clay-streaked soil.

Tall Fescue guide
Bluegrass-Fescue Blends sod

Bluegrass-Fescue Blends

Most Versatile
Min sun: 4–6 hrs Shade: Medium

Bluegrass aesthetics with fescue durability underneath. The default install for most residential sites.

A salt-tolerant bluegrass-fescue blend for more sheltered inland hollows; the fescue carries the salt load while bluegrass adds color.

Best sod for Rhode Island
RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) sod

RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue)

Best for Dogs & Kids
Min sun: 4+ hrs Shade: Medium

Self-repairing rhizome system fills in damage from foot traffic and dog use. Strongest performer for active family lawns.

Good for hard-used summer-rental lawns; self-repairing rhizomes recover from heavy seasonal traffic.

RTF complete guide
Kentucky Bluegrass sod

Kentucky Bluegrass

The Classic
Min sun: 6+ hrs Shade: Low–Medium

Rich color, tight knit-in. The traditional install for Block Island properties with established irrigation.

Least suited to the island's exposure — straight Kentucky bluegrass struggles with the salt wind, so we only suggest it for sheltered, irrigated spots.

Installing Sod on Block Island: One Mobilization, Done Right

Twelve miles out, with salt wind from every direction and no tree line to break it, Block Island is the most exposed ground we install — and the most planned. Everything moves on the ferry, so the job is built as one clean mobilization: sod, topsoil, equipment, and crew scheduled together, morning-cut rolls crossing on the boat and going down the same day they land.

On the island's sandy glacial soil the crew lays a generous topsoil base — the moors don't hold water, so the base has to — grades against the wind-driven rain, and installs deep-rooted tall fescue and salt-tolerant blends, keeping straight bluegrass to the rare sheltered, irrigated pocket. Establishment watering runs deep and disciplined; out here the schedule is the lawn's whole support system.

The new sod care guide covers that establishment stretch day by day, and the Rhode Island sod installation page has the rest of our island and coastal Rhode Island coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install sod across Block Island, Rhode Island?
Yes — full-service install is available across Block Island. Our own install crews handle the install on site — one point of contact from quote through completion — so you get the same end-to-end service we provide in our home market. Lead time is typically 2–7 days from quote. Call (203) 806-4086 to scope your project.
What's your install minimum for Block Island?
Our typical install minimum is 1,200 sq ft. Smaller projects can usually be served with pallet-only delivery (600 sq ft minimum) for you or your landscaper to install.
What's included in your sod install vs. what a landscaper does?
We're sod specialists, not full-service landscapers. We handle the sod-specific work: stripping old turf, topsoil, grading, sod delivery on the same day as install, and laying with tight seams by crews that do this every day. We don't handle hardscape, plantings, irrigation install, tree work, or ongoing maintenance. If your project needs those, hire a landscaper for the full job and we'll work as the sod sub — many landscapers across Block Island already do this with us.
Which sod variety is best for Block Island install?
For full-sun, irrigated lawns, Kentucky bluegrass gives the traditional refined look. For partial shade or drought tolerance, Black Beauty tall fescue. For dogs and active families, RTF (rhizomatous tall fescue). We'll match the variety to your specific site during the quote.
How soon can I walk on the new sod?
Light foot traffic is fine after the first week. Heavy use (parties, kids' games, dog play) should wait 2–3 weeks while the sod roots into the soil. We leave a one-page care sheet with the install covering watering, first-mow timing, and the first month's protocol.
How far ahead should an island install be booked?
Further than anywhere else we work — ferry space and the island season set the calendar, and summer boats fill early. An off-season or early-spring booking gets the install landed and rooted before the island fills; a mid-season call is usually booking for the next window, and we'd rather tell you that up front than juggle you onto a standby boat.
Can the crew really finish in one trip?
That's the design. The mobilization is planned so everything the job needs crosses together — sod cut that morning, topsoil, equipment, crew — and the install runs start to finish while the boat schedule holds. Island work punishes improvisation, so the planning absorbs it instead; what you see on the ground is just a crew that arrived complete.
What keeps the new lawn alive out here after you leave?
The watering schedule, run faithfully — deep cycles that push moisture (and any spray salt) down through the sandy base while the roots chase it. The salt-tolerant fescue does the above-ground work against the wind. Between an irrigation timer or a caretaker with the handoff schedule, the lawn's needs are simple; on Block Island they're just non-negotiable.
What's the best sod for Block Island's salt and wind?
Deep-rooted, salt-tolerant tall fescue and fescue blends are the only reliable choice in this much exposure. Straight bluegrass struggles with the constant salt wind.
How does delivery to Block Island work?
Deliveries are coordinated with the ferry, so they take extra planning and lead time. Let us know your dates early and we'll arrange the logistics.
Does the sandy island soil need topsoil before sod?
Yes. A generous fresh topsoil base over sandy, glacial island soil is important for water and nutrient retention so new sod can root in. Our installs include it.
Is sod better than seed out here?
Generally yes. Fresh-cut sod establishes far faster than seed in Block Island's wind and salt, giving roots a head start before exposure sets in — with deep, consistent early watering.
