
Thirty days after new sod goes down, the lawn is rooted, mowed once, and starting to fade, and the bag that fed it at installation is finished. This post takes the seven products people actually put on top of new sod in the Northeast and scores each one on its own label against what Purdue, Cornell, and UMass say that first surface feed has to do. It says which bags pass, how much of each to use per pallet, and what to buy until OVER SOD™ ships in spring 2027.
Quick answer, as of September 2026. The right fertilizer for on top of new sod in the Northeast is a phosphorus-free bag with slow-release nitrogen and real potassium, applied once, about 30 days after installation, after the sod passes the tug test, at 0.75 to 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. On their own labels, LESCO 24-0-11 and Lebanon Seaboard's Turf Nurture 15-0-7 meet the four university criteria on typical loam soils today. OVER SOD™ 8-0-6 (planned, spring 2027) is the only bag designed to meet all six, including a sod rate printed on the bag. If your sod goes down before OVER SOD™ ships, LESCO 24-0-11 at 4.2 lb per 1,000 sq ft is the bag to buy. It is a separate bag from UNDER SOD™, which is mixed into the soil before the sod is laid and is never applied on top.
What the 30-day feeding has to do: the rubric, before any product is named
The 30-day feeding is the first fertilizer applied on top of new sod, about 30 days after installation, once the sod has rooted. The bag that goes on top of new sod is doing a different job than the bag that went under it. Under the sod, at installation, the fertilizer is mixed into the soil so the severed roots land on it. On top of the sod, about 30 days later, the lawn is rooted, mowed, and growing, and it needs nitrogen for tillering, potassium for the heat and traffic that come next, and color, without a shot of phosphorus it no longer needs and without a nitrogen surge that outruns the roots. People search this as "fertilizer over sod," "fertilizing over new sod," and "what to put on top of new sod." It is all the same question, and it is a different question from the bag under the sod. Before naming a single product, here is what the university turf programs say that feed has to do. Each line below is a requirement in the scorecard.
Purdue Turfgrass Science says never to apply more than 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft in any one application, and not more often than monthly at that rate unless establishing a new lawn; Cornell Turfgrass sets the same ceiling. For the first surface feed on rooted sod, 0.75 to 1.0 lb N per 1,000 sq ft is the window, and the bag's own label rate should land inside it without the homeowner having to cut the rate.
2. Slow-release nitrogen: at least 30 percent on loam, at least 60 percent on sand
Cornell Cooperative Extension recommends a fertilizer with at least 30 percent slow-release nitrogen on non-sandy soils and at least 60 percent on sandy soils. Slow-release nitrogen is what keeps a one-pound feed from burning tender turf or forcing a flush of leaf the roots cannot support. On Cape Cod, Long Island, and the shoreline towns, the 60 percent line is the one that matters.
3. Phosphorus-free: no more than 0.67 percent phosphate
In New York, the state fertilizer law allows only lawn fertilizer under 0.67 percent phosphate by weight on established turf unless a soil test shows a deficiency or the area is being established as a new lawn. In Connecticut, UConn's soil lab explains the 2013 law the same way: phosphorus goes on an established lawn only when a soil test from the last two years calls for it, and lawn maintenance fertilizers sold in the state carry 0 percent phosphorus. By day 30 the phosphorus window has done its work at the root; the top-of-sod bag should be phosphorus-free so it is legal now and legal every year after.
4. Potassium at least 40 percent of the nitrogen
UMass Extension recommends a fertilizer ratio of about 3-1-2 to 5-1-2 when no soil test is available, and a balanced one-part-nitrogen-to-one-part-potassium ratio for late spring, late summer, and early fall feeds. The bottom of that range, 5-1-2, puts potash at 40 percent of the nitrogen; the scorecard uses that as the passing line and prints each bag's actual ratio so you can see how far it sits from the one-to-one UMass prefers for a late-season feed. Potassium is what the rooted lawn spends on heat, drought, and foot traffic in its first summer and first winter.
5. Iron for color that does not stain
This one is a field requirement, not a university rule. A rooted lawn at day 30 wants color, and iron gives color without adding nitrogen. Iron sulfate stains concrete, pool coping, and pavers orange; sucrate and chelated iron forms are sold as low-staining or non-staining, and the label tells you which one is in the bag. The LESCO 24-0-11 label itself tells you to sweep or blow the product off walks and painted surfaces to avoid discoloration. That instruction is on the label because it matters.
6. A sod rate printed on the bag
Also a field requirement. Every bag in the scorecard below is labeled in square feet per bag for an established lawn. Sod is bought in pallets of 500 sq ft, and the 30-day feeding happens once, by whoever installed the lawn or the homeowner standing next to the leftover pallet wrap. A bag that says "one bag per four pallets" gets applied correctly; a bag that requires dividing 12,000 by 500 on a tailgate gets applied at whatever setting the spreader was left on. This is the criterion the other six bags were never designed to meet, and a wrong rate on the right bag is behind more of the burned and starved new lawns we hear about than a wrong bag.
The scorecard
Seven products, scored on their own labels against the six requirements above. The first four requirements come from the universities; the last two come from the field. Pass, close, and fail are marked from the label numbers, not from marketing copy. OVER SOD™ is scored on its planned label; it is not purchasable until spring 2027, and the shipped label is the one that counts.

Disqualified before scoring: the high-phosphorus starters. Scotts Turf Builder Starter (24-25-4), Jonathan Green Green-Up for Seeding and Sodding (12-18-8), and LESCO 18-24-12 are pre-plant products for the soil under the sod. On top of rooted sod they are the wrong bag for the step, and on established turf in New York and Connecticut they are only legal with a soil test that calls for phosphorus. If your soil test was low in phosphorus, that phosphate belongs in the soil at installation, not on the surface at day 30. See the under-sod comparison for that step.
What a fair reader should take from the scorecard. The four university requirements can be met today by LESCO 24-0-11 and Turf Nurture 15-0-7, and a careful person can meet requirement one with almost any phosphorus-free bag by cutting the rate. OVER SOD™ separates on the two field requirements, the non-staining iron and the sod rate on the bag, and on potash carried at three-quarters of the nitrogen instead of just under half. That is the whole argument: not that the other bags cannot do this job, but that OVER SOD™ is the only one built so the pallet math, the phosphorus law, the iron, and the summer-safe nitrogen rate are already the bag. Two more things a fair reader should know. A hot synthetic like the 32-0-4 will win the day-14 color photo; slow-release bags green up slower by design. And OVER SOD™ is scored on a planned label. When the bag ships, this table will be re-scored against the printed one.
How much of each bag per pallet
Sod is sold by the 500 sq ft pallet, so here is the same rubric in the unit people actually have in front of them. Amounts are at each product's label rate above.

Spreader settings. Print only what the label says. LESCO, Jonathan Green, Milorganite, and Turf Nurture list rotary and drop settings on the bag for their own rates; use the setting for the rate in the table above, not the "established lawn" setting. Scotts lists a broadcast setting of 3 3/4 and a drop setting of 7 on retailer spec sheets and 3 and 6 on others for the same bag, so check the bag you bought. If a spreader setting is not printed for the rate you need, weigh the product out for a known area and calibrate; the Turf Nurture label's method, spreading a weighed amount over two 2-foot-by-100-foot passes, works for any bag.
The 30-day feeding planner
Enter the installation date, your state, and the lawn size. The planner gives you the day-30 date, checks it against your state's fertilizer blackout, and prints how much of the bag you chose to put down.
Plan your 30-day feeding
Your 30-day feeding date is September 26, 2026. Do the tug test first. If a corner of the sod lifts, wait, water, and check again in a week.
Connecticut: no application of fertilizer, soil amendment, or compost that contains phosphate to any lawn December 1 through March 15, and none within 20 feet of any water body (15 feet with a drop spreader, a rotary spreader with a deflector, or targeted spray). A phosphorus-free bag is not covered by the December 1 to March 15 date in the statute, but do not apply any fertilizer to frozen or snow-covered ground.
Your feeding date is outside Connecticut's blackout window.

The branches: when the answer changes
Your soil test says phosphorus is low
A low phosphorus test changes the bag that goes under the sod, not the bag that goes on top at day 30. Phosphorus is immobile in soil, so the place to put it is in the rooting zone at installation, where the university guides put it. On top of rooted sod at day 30, surface phosphate does little and, on established turf in New York and Connecticut, is only legal with a soil test that recommends it. Keep the day-30 bag phosphorus-free and follow the test's phosphorus recommendation at the next installation or renovation. Day 30 lands in July or August
Summer changes the timing and the rate, not the bag. Purdue's turf program warns against aggressive summer nitrogen because of disease risk, Jonathan Green's directions say not to apply at 85 degrees or above or to stressed turf, and the Scotts label says to water in immediately above 90 degrees. Wait for the tug test, skip the application in a heat wave or if the sod is wilted, and use the same phosphorus-free bag at 0.5 to 0.75 lb N per 1,000 sq ft. Source: Purdue Turfgrass Science.
Sandy soil: Cape Cod, Long Island, the shoreline
On sandy soil the slow-release share is the requirement that decides the bag. Cornell's 60 percent line rules out the quick-release synthetics in a single pass; the workaround with a quick-release bag is a half rate now and the other half three weeks later, which is two applications for one feed. On the label numbers, Turf Nurture (70 percent slow-release), Milorganite (67 percent, but with phosphate), and OVER SOD™ (planned mostly slow-release) meet the 60 percent line in one pass. Day 30 lands in a blackout window
If the feed date falls inside your state's fertilizer blackout, the 30-day feeding becomes the first spring feeding; it is not made up with a double application. Connecticut's statute blacks out phosphate products December 1 through March 15; New York blacks out all nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer December 1 through April 1, with local blackouts starting November 1 in Suffolk County and November 15 in Nassau County; Massachusetts blacks out lawn fertilizer December 1 through March 1; New Jersey blacks out homeowners November 15 through March 1 and professionals December 1 through March 1. You are on well water or a watering restriction
A granular feed needs to be watered in, and a lawn on a restricted watering schedule has to plan the feed for an allowed watering day. Water the day before, apply, and water in the same day. Milorganite's label says it does not need to be watered in; the others do. If your town is on a utility schedule, the town guides list the allowed days and the new-lawn variance windows.
The sod is not rooted at day 30
A calendar cannot tell you the sod is rooted; a tug test can. If a corner lifts at day 30, the problem is water, not fertilizer, and feeding a lawn that has not rooted pushes leaf the roots cannot support. Fix the watering, check again in a week, and feed when the sod holds.
You are in New Jersey
New Jersey caps a single application at 0.9 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft and requires at least 20 percent slow-release nitrogen. The two bags whose label rate delivers a full pound, OVER SOD™ and LESCO 24-0-11, are over the cap by a tenth of a pound at full rate; cut them by 10 percent: OVER SOD™ at about 11 lb per 1,000, LESCO 24-0-11 at about 3.8 lb per 1,000. Turf Nurture, Milorganite, Green-Up, and the Scotts 32-0-4 are at or under 0.9 lb N at their label rates. Sunday's Northeast liquid claims no slow-release nitrogen, so its label does not meet New Jersey's 20 percent requirement. The planner does this arithmetic when New Jersey is selected. What we do not know yet
- OVER SOD™ is scored on its planned label. The water-insoluble nitrogen percentage, the iron source, and the final analysis are set by the manufacturer's label, and the shipped label is what we will re-score against.
- No independent trial has compared these bags on new sod in the Northeast. The scorecard is label data against university guidance, not a controlled study. When OVER SOD™ ships in spring 2027, this page will add dated day-30 observations from our own installations.
- Slow-release percentages for LESCO 24-0-11 and Jonathan Green Green-Up vary by version and are taken from the label and retailer specifications; the bag in your hand governs.
- Sunday does not publish pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft for the Northeast product; the figure in the scorecard is our arithmetic from the listed size and analysis.
The procedure, in one place
- Soil test first if you have not done one (UConn, Cornell, UMass, or Rutgers). It decides whether phosphorus belongs anywhere in the plan.
- At day 30, do the tug test. If a corner lifts, wait.
- Water the lawn the day before so granules do not sit on dry leaf.
- Apply a phosphorus-free, slow-release bag at 0.75 to 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft (0.9 in New Jersey), at the rate in the table above. One pass, once.
- Sweep or blow anything that lands on pavement back onto the lawn.
- Water in the same day.
- Mow only after the sod is anchored, never more than a third of the blade.
- The next feeding follows the normal cool-season calendar for your grass and region, with the late-August-to-October feed as the important one. Do not stack a starter and a fall feed in the same month.
