A Meriden Lawn That Needed a Full Reset

Project update — site prep is complete August 26, 2026; delivery and installation are scheduled for August 27.

The lawn at this Meriden, Connecticut property had been badly tunneled by cicada killer wasps. The homeowner had already taken the right first step: last week, we helped her find a pest-control company familiar with the problem, and the property was treated before the lawn work began. Today was our turn — open up the damaged surface, work the ground back into shape, and leave a clean, graded base ready for fresh sod.

Tomorrow, August 27, the next step is scheduled: 3,600 square feet of farm-cut sod will be delivered and installed. This is a live project update, so the installation is not being described as finished before the crew has laid it. We will add the finished-lawn photos when that work is complete.

Why the Existing Lawn Had to Go

Cicada killer wasps are large, solitary wasps that dig underground tunnels to provision their nests. They are generally not looking to attack people, but a lawn full of burrows, loose soil, and uneven patches is still a real lawn problem — especially when the surface has become too rough to restore with ordinary seeding or patching.

On this property, the damage was widespread enough that a clean reset made more sense than trying to chase individual bare spots. Treating the pest issue first mattered. There is no point putting a new lawn over an active problem, and the soil work needed to wait until the treatment had been completed.

Today’s Prep: From Damaged Lawn to Ready Grade

The prep crew worked across the full lawn area today. The ground was opened up, tilled, and brought back toward a consistent grade so the new sod has a firm, even base. The featured prep photo above shows the property at the stage that matters before a sod truck arrives: the lawn areas are worked and graded, with the surface ready for the final installation step.

What Happens Tomorrow

The sod is scheduled to be cut fresh at the farm and delivered for the 3,600-square-foot installation. Once it arrives, our all-terrain forklift can place pallets close to the working area while the crew lays the rolls tight across the prepared grade. Fresh-cut sod should not sit around: delivery and installation are planned for the same day so the new lawn can be watered as soon as it is down.

The job will be judged by the finished surface, not just the machinery or the prep stage. The goal is a clean, continuous lawn that replaces the tunneled and uneven ground with a stable new growing surface. After installation, the homeowner will receive the watering guidance for the first few weeks while the roots knit into the soil.

The Meriden Project Is Not Finished Yet

Today’s work is complete, but this case study is intentionally still a progress update. The pest-control treatment happened last week, prep happened today, and delivery and installation are scheduled for tomorrow. We will update this page with the finished installation media rather than implying that tomorrow’s work has already happened.

If your lawn has been damaged by tunneling, construction, heavy traffic, or a failed patching attempt, start with the site conditions and the square footage. CT Sod installs across Meriden from the local sod installation page and can also coordinate sod delivery in Meriden. For broader preparation guidance, see what to put down before sod before requesting a written quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are cicada killer wasps?+
Cicada killer wasps are large, mostly solitary wasps that dig underground burrows and bring cicadas into them for their young. They are generally not looking to attack people, but their burrows and the loose soil around them can leave a lawn uneven and difficult to restore.
Why was pest control done before the sod preparation?+
The property was treated last week before the lawn was prepared. Resolving the active pest concern first means the new sod is not being installed over a problem that is still in progress.
How much sod is planned for the Meriden project?+
The scheduled installation covers approximately 3,600 square feet of fresh sod across the prepared lawn area.
Is the Meriden sod installation already finished?+
Not at the time of this update. Site prep was completed August 26, 2026, and delivery and installation are scheduled for August 27. The finished installation media will be added after the sod is actually laid.
Can CT Sod help with a lawn that has been damaged by tunneling?+
Yes. The first step is to understand the active cause and the condition of the existing lawn. Once any pest-control work is handled, CT Sod can quote the necessary preparation and the fresh-sod installation based on the lawn's square footage and access.

We had a great experience with CT Sod. After our pool installation, our yard needed significant cleanup and restoration. Their team did an excellent job prepping the area with quality topsoil and installing the new sod. They were professional, friendly, and especially careful working around our brand-new pool and patio. Communication was easy throughout the process via text, and they took the time to recommend the right type of sod specifically for the conditions in our yard. The finished lawn exceeded our expectations and looks fantastic. They also provided great value—we were able to use the extra topsoil and sod to improve other areas of our property. Overall, very happy with the quality of the work and the entire experience with CT Sod.

I recently dealt with Sean and Kayla to set up a sod installation around a new pool - couldn’t be happier with the process, price, and results. Highly recommend CT Sod - you won’t be disappointed with this company. I snapped this while the guys were working. In 4 hours they almost had the whole 5,000 square feet of fresh Kentucky Bluegrass installed. Results speak for themselves.
