Down on the valley floor — Middletown, Cromwell, Portland — the lower Connecticut River left richer ground that takes sod readily once the old turf is stripped and the grade is trued. Up on the traprock ridges and the wooded lots around Haddam and East Haddam, the ground turns rocky and thin, so the crew rakes out stone and lays a fresh topsoil base before the first roll goes down. Either way, the sod is cut at the farm that morning and laid the same day, seams staggered tight and rolled in.
