How Much Does Professional Sod Installation Cost?
Fully installed sod in the Northeast typically runs $2.00–$5.00 per square foot all-in (material plus labor), with most residential jobs landing between $2.50 and $3.50/sq ft. Material alone is $0.66–$1.40/sq ft delivered depending on variety and order volume. Install labor adds $1.50–$3.50/sq ft for prep and laying. Small jobs (under 1,000 sq ft) skew higher per sq ft because crew dispatch, truck, and material minimums spread across less area.

Material is the actual delivered KBG price (all-in pre-tax; sales tax is calculated at checkout based on your delivery address). Labor is an estimated range — actual quotes depend on site conditions, prep depth, access, and grading needs.
What Drives the Install Price
- Existing lawn removal. Sod cutter work to strip old turf is the biggest variable. A weedy meadow takes more time than a thin bare lot.
- Soil prep depth. Light raking is fast. Full till plus 1–2 inches of imported topsoil is a half day with a small crew.
- Site access. Truck reach, gate width, slope, and how far the rolls have to be hand-carried matter.
- Grade correction. Filling low spots or building a slope away from the foundation adds labor and sometimes material.
- Variety. RTF runs roughly $0.40/sq ft more than Kentucky Bluegrass at any volume.
DIY vs. Professional
For lawns up to roughly 2,000 sq ft, DIY is realistic for two people over a weekend. You save the labor portion ($1.50–$3.50/sq ft) but pay $200–$400 in tool rentals (sod cutter, tiller, roller). For a 1,000 sq ft DIY install, total cost lands around $1,400–$1,900 versus $2,600–$4,600 professionally installed.
Above 2,000 sq ft, professional install usually pays for itself in speed and quality — a crew lays in 6 hours what takes a weekend solo, and the rolls go down before they start cooking on the pallet.
