We delivered 5,000 square feet of fresh-cut Kentucky bluegrass to a home in Stamford, Connecticut — a backyard graded down to clean dirt and running right out to the water. The pallets came off the truck the same day the sod came off the field, and before we pulled away we walked the homeowner through exactly how to water a brand-new lawn through the heat wave moving in that week. Here's the job, start to finish.
A Backyard Graded Down to Bare Dirt
Every good sod job starts where the camera usually doesn't: bare ground. This Stamford yard was stripped, graded, and raked to a firm, even bed — mature trees along the back line and a pond at the bottom of the property, with the soil worked smooth from the foundation all the way down to the water.

From the side of the house you can read the whole canvas — roughly 5,000 square feet of prepared soil running from the deck out to the water's edge. A firm, even grade like this is what lets fresh sod knit down fast and lie flat, with no low spots to puddle or settle later.

5,000 Sq Ft of Kentucky Bluegrass, Cut Fresh and Delivered
Kentucky bluegrass is the classic Northeast lawn for good reason — a fine, dense blade, a deep blue-green color, and rhizomes that let it knit together and repair itself over time. It's a natural fit for a sunny Fairfield County yard like this one. We cut it to order and had it on site the same day, stacked at the driveway so it never sat drying on a pallet. Sod is perishable — the fresher it goes down over prepared ground, the faster it roots and the better it holds.
Stamford is actually one of our busiest sod installation markets, and we both install and deliver here. On this job the homeowner would have had us lay it too, but his cousin is a landscaper and installed it for free, so we handled the fresh-cut delivery — dropping the pallets at the property for the family to lay over the prepped bed. If you're still weighing varieties, here's our rundown of the best sod for Fairfield County.
The Finished Kentucky Bluegrass Lawn
Laid over that firm bed, the rolls came together into one clean, continuous lawn — edge to edge against the granite Belgian-block curb and the arborvitae line out front. This is what 5,000 square feet of fresh Kentucky bluegrass looks like once it's down and settling in.

Watering New Sod Through a Heat Wave
A lawn this fresh lives or dies by water in the first couple of weeks — and a heat wave the same week makes that window even tighter. New sod has only the shallow roots it grew with at the farm, so until it knits into the soil below, it can't pull moisture the way an established lawn does. With the temperatures climbing, here's the plan we left the homeowner with.

- Day one, the moment it's down: soak it through so the water reaches the soil under the sod, not just the blades — the bed should be wet, not puddled.
- First 1–2 weeks, in the heat: water two to three times a day — early morning, midday, and late afternoon — keeping the sod and the soil beneath it consistently moist. Short, frequent cycles beat one long soak.
- Watch the edges and seams: corners, edges, and seams dry out and shrink first. If you see them lifting or going tan, that spot needs more water.
- Don't water at night: stop by late afternoon so the blades dry before dark — overnight wetness in the heat invites fungus.
- Weeks 3–4, easing off: once it's rooted (give a corner a gentle tug — resistance means roots), taper to deeper, less frequent watering to pull the roots down.
If the sod ever feels dry, or looks gray-blue or wilted between cycles during the heat wave, it needs water sooner — not more fertilizer. You almost can't overwater brand-new sod in its first week of 90-degree days, as long as the water drains and never stands.
Graded right, cut fresh, laid the same day, and watered through the heat — that's the whole recipe for a Kentucky bluegrass lawn that takes hold and stays.
