Many of our customers ask what the "best" sod is for New England. In New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island) we grow what are called cool season grasses. The most common types of cool-season grasses are Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, Fine Fescue, and Tall Fescue. These grass sod varieties are what grow best in our climate. Each is unique and has slight differences in what it likes and the appearance of the individual grass blades. Out of those varieties we carry Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, & Fine Fescue Sod.
Kentucky Bluegrass Sod
Kentucky Bluegrass Sod
The most popular type of sod grown and used in our area is Kentucky Bluegrass. Kentucky Bluegrass is used throughout the northern U.S. It grows well and has dark green grass blades. Bluegrass will do well in medium-high traffic areas, tolerate moderate shade, and do well in the areas with long durations of direct sunlight. It tends to be aggressive and will often fill in bare spots on its own.

Tall Fescue Sod
Tall Fescue Sod is a bunch-type grass that will produce a deep root system. Due to it's drought tolerance we recommend tall fescue for those that don't have irrigation systems and are putting sod in full sun. Tall fescue also is a hardier varietal that does well in heavier traffic areas. Our most popular sod variety is a mix of Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall Fescue Sod. When ordering you can just ask for "the mix" and we will know what you're referring to.

Fine Fescue Sod
There are multiple varieties of fine fescue—creeping chewings fescue, red fescue, sheep fescue, and hard fescue. Fine fescues, as the name implies, have a fine leaf texture and are a lighter green, with just a hint of grey. Fine Fescue is generally not used on its own; rather it is mixed in with other seed types to provide fast growth and shade tolerance.

Perennial Ryegrass
Perennial ryegrass is a non-spreading cool-season grass that germinates faster than other grass seed types. It has fine blades and does well in even high-traffic areas of the yard. Ryegrass is often used in areas where quick germination is needed, such as for erosion control. When you mow your lawn and then look at the freshly cut blades, ryegrass will usually have a white tip.
